Performs professional and administrative duties necessary to provide counseling and risk assessment for genetic conditions to patients and families.

We are looking for an engaged and flexible GC supervisor to work with our administrative team to deliver and evaluate the genetic counseling services in a manner that meets continuous quality improvement, customer service, programmatic growth and financial requirements supporting the mission of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.  The GC supervisor will lead the development of metrics for assessing quality and outcomes of genetic counseling services; ensure that GCs meet various state and federal regulatory agency requirements; and support cost-saving and revenue-generating practices for genetic counseling services. The GC supervisor will work with the Director of Genetic Counseling and the Chief of Genetic and Genomic Medicine on strategic planning, program growth including partnering with other service lines, research involvement, and involvement in the University of Pittsburgh Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. This position has direct managerial responsibilities to a team of 20 GCs and 5 GCAs.  In addition to leadership responsibilities, the position provides some direct clinical services, not to exceed 25%. This position will require some travel to Wexford & Monroeville, as well as Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. 


  • Interview, select, orient, train and evaluate employees. Schedule and assign work ensuring adequate staffing and efficient workflow.
  • Completes performance evaluations for direct reports
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of effective workflow patterns, delineation of duties and responsibilities, staffing levels and appropriate supervision
  • Assists with development of departmental policies.
  • Orients genetic counseling interns, residents, fellows and other learners during their rotation through the department. Assure adequate patient/clinical exposure for trainees.
  • Attends clinical and management meetings
  • Maintains communications and enhances referral patterns with all referral sources
  • Participates with management in the development of departmental goals and plans.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Oversees orientation and in-service programs within department
  • Performs clinical responsibilities at a highly proficient level; clinical duties may be reduced due to additional responsibilities
  • Provide professional advice and direction to clinical services personnel concerning rare/complex patient referrals; adopt procedures and methods to effectively handle problem situations
  • Communicates and enforces departmental and hospital wide policies.



  • Master of Science in Human Genetics/Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC) accredited institution.
  • 7 years as a GC (GC III or higher) and at least 1 year of previous clinical operational supervisory experience (not student related).
  • OR clinical responsibilities that include managerial responsibilities.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified genetic counselor who holds a PA license.
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
