Research Project Assistant WPI | Dr. Tharick Pascoal’s Research Laboratory

Description

Dr. Tharick Pascoal’s research laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry/Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic (WPIC) in Oakland, Pittsburgh, focuses on monitoring the progression of Alzheimer’s disease through the evaluation of biomarkers using techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluid biomarker assays. Our group is currently hiring a full-time Research Project Coordinator to support an imminent human subjects research study.

The purpose of the Res Project Coordinator WPIC is to assist with, under the direction of the Research Operations Coordinator, the enrollment, informed consent, scheduling, and data collection for older research participants for a longitudinal study involving PET and MR imaging, blood draw, and cognitive testing. This research study is funded by the NIH and is conducted in compliance with federal (FDA) and institutional procedures and regulations and involves the use of Investigational New Drugs (IND). Duties of the Research Project Coordinator include conducting participant screening calls, keeping accurate records of participant interactions, assisting with informed consent procedures, responding to participant questions or concerns, coordinating and scheduling research visits, oversee data collection, conducting database entry and management (REDcap), assisting with record keeping and reporting, and other day-to-day study operations.

The ideal candidate has experience with or an interest in working with older adults and an interest in psychiatric and/or biomedical research.  Additionally, this candidate will have excellent communication skills, is highly organized, enjoys working in a collaborative work environment, enjoys interacting with new people, and embodies a professional work ethic: timeliness, dependability, adaptability, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate study participant recruitment from various sources, i.e., advertisements, registries.
  • Coordinate scheduling of participant assessments, including visit set-up and accompanying participants to their PET and MRI scans at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
  • Assist with quality assurance over all aspects of data collection and management, including data flow, data entry and verification, maintenance of project databases, data security and confidentiality.
  • Monitor and maintain participant research study payment.
  • Coordinate day to day activities for the fulfillment of the study protocol.
  • Provide supervision for junior staff.
  • Responsible for preparing and modifying regulatory binders and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Communicate effectively with the research, clinical, and administrative staff related to this research.
  • Responsible for the submission of regular reports detailing the progress of the research, including NIH progress reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Business administration or related area of study and three years of relevant research and/or clinical experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with older adults preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification and/or experience preferred.
  • Laboratory skills (centrifuging & aliquoting) preferred.
