UPMC's South Hills Surgery Center is hiring a full-time Lead Central Sterile Processing Tech to join their growing team! In this role, you will be supporting the OR with cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments. You will be responsible for keeping current with the latest practices of HSPA, AAMI, and IAHCSMM, the governing bodies of central processing. Your work shifts will be 5 8-hour shifts each week, alternating between 6:15 am to 2:30 pm and 9 am to 5:30 pm. You will not be expected to work nights, holidays, weekends, or on call! This location also offers free parking!!
Responsibilities
- Independently run the department on off shifts and weekends or in the absence of the director.
- Conforms and adheres to department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control, and safety.
- Arranges in-service education programs
- Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergencies
- Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques.
- Prepares and assembles surgical trays and equipment following established tray listings for issue, storage, or further processing
- Maintains a working knowledge of, and can effectively troubleshoot, all decontamination/sterilization equipment
- Acts as liaison between SPD and OR.
- Evaluates staff schedule and re-assign staff according to departmental needs.

- Assesses supplies required for prescribed standard surgical procedures and sets up case carts.

- Develops management skills through completion of the Human Resource Journey to Management course and one additional management seminar
- Assists manager with performance appraisals
- Monitors, reads, documents, and interprets all parameters for all types of sterilizers to ensure proper function.
- Serves as the resource for information for employees and customers
- Cleans and decontaminates reusable equipment, instruments, and supplies, manually and mechanically.
- Independently manage the department on off-shifts and week-ends or in the absence of the manager.
- Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care.
Qualifications
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Three years of central sterile processing experience required OR Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing program with two years of central sterile processing experience required.
- Annual Project Required.
- Must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician OR International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
