Research Specialist | The Geriatric Psychiatry Neuroimaging (GPN) Program


The Geriatric Psychiatry Neuroimaging (GPN) Program is interested in the mental health of the fastest growing population of our communities, the elderly and aging. GPN program also studies non-geriatric populations to understand mood and anxiety disorders.  As a part of this goal, Dr. Shaolin Yang leads efforts to develop optimal methods for acquiring neuroimaging data to assess brain structures, function, and neurochemistry, and how the alternations in these measures may affect predisposition to anxiety compared to healthy controls. The employee will assist with recruitment, assisting with research assessments, obtaining informed consent, scheduling participants for MRI scans, and accompanying them to procedures. The ideal candidate would be someone who is looking for experience with directly interacting with participants and would enjoy working with both young adult and geriatric populations.  The individual should be enthusiastic about being involved in multiple research projects.

The schedule for this position is to accommodate study populations (evenings and weekends upon request) and concentrated according to availability of the MRI scanner (Sunday through Wednesday).  There will also be weekly team meetings held on Thursday afternoons.

Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s). Collect, gather, organize, and enter research data for research project.


  • Independently execute job functions for research protocol(s) including recruitment, scheduling appointments (MRI and clinical assessments), obtaining written consent forms, accompanying participants to MRI scans, collecting data by conducting phone or face to face interviews for research project(s).
  • Collaborate with senior research personnel regarding recruitment, data collection, outcomes of interviews, reports according to the needs of the study.
  • Maintain familiarity with study protocols in order to ensure adherence in all research activities.
  • Complete first contacts to individuals expressing interest in the study in a timely manner.  Provide brief introduction to study and conduct preliminary evaluation over the phone for those who express interest in the study. 
  • Maintain system for record keeping and ensure accurate data entry, completing data quality control checks as necessary
  • In collaboration with senior personnel, assist with MRI safety clearances by pulling electronic medical records and/or requesting records outside of the system as they pertain to implants that may affect MRI safety
  • Communicate frequently with participants via reminder calls, e-mails, and letters as necessary regarding assessment schedule.


  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology or related research field.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
