Description
UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is excited to be hiring a Specialty Molecular Cytogenetic Technologist or Molecular Cytogenetic Technologist to help support the lab! This role will be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.- no weekends or holidays!
Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Molecular Cyto Tech salary starts at $26.55/hr.
Responsibilities:
- Runs appropriate fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) or microarray comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) protocol based on referral diagnosis utilizing proper probe(s).
- Utilizes appropriate detection methods for optimal visualization of fluorescent signal(s).
- Processes amniotic fluid, CVS, or tissue specimens for analysis of uncultured cells. Determines the number of slides to be made based on the size of the sample and clinical diagnosis.
- Performs various additional testing for the development of probes, new techniques, and development of additional molecular cytogenetic tests in order to maintain the laboratory's state-of-the-art technology
- Assists with the training of other technologists, students, and various hospital professionals.
- Participates in identifying and directing ancillary work to be performed by support and service personnel and volunteers.
- For aCGH tests, extracts DNA on patient samples, determining the quality and quantity of DNA extracted. Keeps accurate records of DNA extractions on all patients in the department database.
- Chooses and runs appropriate aCGH protocol based on test ordered and patient referring diagnosis.
- Performs data analysis on aCGH lab results and determines molecular diagnosis in consultation with the Lab Directors.
- Analyzes slides on fluorescent microscope and determines and records the location of cells. Counts and records the number of signals present and determines if the appropriate numbers of signals are present or if a deletion, duplication, or rearrangement is present.
- Participates in a rotating weekend and holiday on-call schedule and carries a pager. Performs techniques necessary to acquire STAT FISH diagnoses. Calls physician or pathologist with results

- Maintains records of specimen processing, including accessioning of samples, entering of patient data and results into the departmental computer system and record books, and cross-referencing to other specimens. Assists Lead Technologist with the maintenance of probe and data lists.
- Image captures appropriate number of cells on each case on the Department's computerized imaging system. Prepares color images for each case on the imaging system and analyzes them for the presence of abnormalities.
- Determines molecular cytogenetic diagnosis for patient in consultation with Senior Technologist and/or Lab Manager, Supervisor or Lab Director.
- Cleans and maintains supplies and equipment.
- Monitors the temperature of incubators, refrigerators, freezers, and water baths to ensure optimal equipment performance. Ensures that adequate supplies and reagents are kept on hand and ordered in a timely manner.
