University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a Full-Time Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care (PNP-AC) to join our incredible team of 24 Pediatric Hematology/Oncology faculty physicians and 10 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). In this APP Supervisor role, you will support an amazing team of ambulatory and inpatient APPs while maintaining clinical practice in an outpatient general peds heme/onc setting.  The position is 75% clinical, with 25% dedicated to APP supervisory responsibilities.

Location: UMPC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Position Specifics: Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience required; 7+ years preferred. Experience with personnel management and pediatric hematology/oncology clinical practice preferred.  Leadership, communication and/or management training (degree/certification/coursework…) preferred, but not required. Experience with personnel management preferred, but not required

Responsibilities:

  • Provides departmental leadership to direct, supervise, and manage daily activities of the PAs and CRNPs; completes annual performance evaluations.
  • Participates in recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and management of PA and CRNP employees.
  • Facilitates training of all PAs and CRNPs.
  • Oversee staff adherence to compliance requirements including documentation, coding, licensure, internal and external audits, compliance, and safety training (OSHA).
  • In collaboration with Senior Practice Manager and Clinical Director, organize and oversee staffing of clinical sites with attending physician and Division Administrator.
  • Troubleshoot problems in clinical areas. Work in conjunction with clinical staff to resolve issues.
  • Liaison for all Peds Heme/Onc advanced practice providers. This would include communication to the division management and physicians on behalf of the advanced practice providers, as well as communication to the APPs from management.
  • Primary contact for clinical or practice concerns on behalf of the APP(s).
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional development for PAs and CRNPs that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care.
  • Actively participates in practice specific goal setting and supports the change and transition process to improve quality of care and the practice environment.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.

UPMC Children’s Hospital offers Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship training in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology for all incoming team members, regardless of experience, to support transition to practice for those new to a subspecialty, ongoing learning and growth for those with experience in the subspecialty, and to promote seamless integration into a new role and institution. 

The UPMC Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in patient care delivery through an innovative and world-class clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market.

The UPMC Pediatric APP Fellowship Program cultivates a mastery of pediatric fundamentals including acute care, ambulatory care, procedure performance, and principles of pediatric subspecialty medicine. The Pediatric APP Fellows are employed, paid learners with the goal to provide the manual skill, fundamental knowledge, and critical thinking skills needed to make sound clinical judgments on a daily basis. Pediatric APP Fellows are being trained to provide autonomous comprehensive pediatric care, within the scope of their license and in collaboration with their supervising physician.

The first one year of employment will consist of the UPMC Pediatric Hematology/Oncology APP Fellowship Program. Candidates with greater than or equal to 3 (three) years’ experience within Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, will have the option of foregoing the Fellowship Program, but are encouraged to enroll for the most comprehensive onboarding experience possible.

Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is accredited as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.

Purpose:
The Supervisor, APP is a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and a member of the care delivery team. The Supervisor, APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Supervisor, APP coordinates and oversees all physician assistant and certified nurse practitioner functions. The Supervisor, APP has responsibility, authority, and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Supervisor, APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Supervisor, APP encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. The Supervisor, APP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients, and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Supervisor, APP demonstrates a commitment to the community and to their healthcare profession.

Qualifications

The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • 5 years as a certified nurse practitioner, physician assistant or relevant managerial experience required (at least 3 of the 5 years from APP experience)
  • 3 years of experience in the department specialty preferred.
  • For Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner: The successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program is required, MSN preferred.

Special Skills and Abilities Required:

In addition to the responsibilities of the Staff APP, the Supervisor, APP must meet the following criteria to achieve supervisor status:

  • Must supervise 3 APPs.
  • Must maintain clinical practice at least 25% of the time.
  • Must precept at least 1 student per year.
  • Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice.

Licensure, Education, Certifications, and Clearances:

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP):

  • The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
  • BSN, MSN is preferred
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
  • Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Act 33 Clearance will be required 
  • Act 73 Clearance will be required 
  • Act 34 Clearance required

Physician Assistant (PA):  

  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required 
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred 
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred 
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
