Description
Purpose:
The Pharmacy Technician II, under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist, will assist in the preparation, dispensing, charging, and delivery of medications to patients. Patients served include all age groups.
Responsibilities:
- Proactively and continuously answers the telephone, waits on customers, and checks the pneumatic tube station.
- Understands and complies with handling procedures for controlled substances.
- Repackages medications as necessary and completes all required documentation.
- Properly labels pre-made IV solutions and admixtures.
- Prepares and labels non-sterile compounds and other required products. Performs necessary calculations. Completes all necessary documentation.
- Delivers medications to patient care units, and transfers/removes appropriate medications when necessary.
- Accurately prepares and labels medications for dispensing or distribution under the supervision of the pharmacist. Initials after filling all orders and ensures a pharmacist review before dispensing.
- Fills and delivers interdepartmental orders. Completes all necessary documentation.
- Inspects medications in assigned areas (i. e. Pharmacy, patient care units, procedural areas, and off-site areas). Removes expired or recalled medications and completes documentation.
- Demonstrates an understanding and ability to use current equipment, including pneumatic tube, fax machines, printers, computers, automated dispensing cabinets, telephones, etc.
- Fills and replaces medications to automated dispensing cabinets.
- Assists in training employees and pharmacy students with regard to work procedures.
- Completes all necessary documentation including medication credits, charge forms and various logs according to departmental procedures.
- Prepares and labels IV admixtures and other sterile products. Performs necessary calculations. Demonstrates an understanding of and utilizes proper aseptic technique. Once trained, prepares specialty products such as chemotherapy, epidurals, etc. under the direction of a pharmacist.
- Maintains Pharmacy in a clean, orderly and safe manner by restocking shelves, cleaning work stations, returning medications to stock, etc.
- Promotes Mission, Vision and Values of UPMC Pinnacle.
- Participates in Performance Improvement as it relates to the Department.
- Travels among UPMC Pinnacle facilities when mutually agreed upon to complete assigned Pharmacy activities.
- Daily contact with Nursing Departmental Personnel, other departmental hospital personnel, physicians, and other UPMC Pinnacle employees.
- Participates in special projects as required or assigned.
- Demonstrates flexibility in work assignments.
- Completes annual technician ladder project as outlined in the Pharmacy Technician Ladder program and any additional projects assigned by Pharmacy Leadership.
- Consistently communicates in a courteous and professional manner when interacting with customers and coworkers. Respects confidentiality and established boundaries when providing information. Consistently reports any issues or problems to a manager as soon as possible. Consistently displays teamwork by actively supporting departmental changes, assisting coworkers willingly and proactively assisting new employees.
- Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure.
- Consistently demonstrates professionalism by displaying flexibility, positive attitude, respect for individuals and commitment to the organization, department, profession, and patient. Consistently delivers high quality, accurate work in a timely manner. Effectively utilizes resources and identifies opportunities to improve efficiencies in the department. Consistently demonstrates leadership. Acts as a role model for fellow technicians in performing daily tasks as well as initiating supplemental duties.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
- Minimum of twelve months of recent health-system pharmacy experience AND fully trained in all areas of health-system pharmacy including preparation of sterile products.
- Must take a written advanced operational test during the interview process and annually and must achieve a score of 80% in either health system pharmacy or relevant area of focus.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
