Job Summary:
Supervise staff to ensure maximum productivity and accuracy of all coding and appeals. Completes audits and monitors productivity for new and existing staff to ensure appropriate coding and documentation and provide feedback as appropriate. Monitors all work queues to ensure all KPI's are maintained. Ensures adherence to all applicable SOX coding and reimbursement controls. Provides coding and reimbursement reports to administration. Participate in the recruitment and evaluation of staff members under direct supervision. Reviews/approves adjustments to accounts. Responsible for Kronos approval and sign off.


  • Monitor all activity for the Coding department and ensures appropriate staff coverage. Monitor the appeal process for identification of consistent errors and follow up with the UPMC and/or non-UPMC management for improvement in quality and performance.
  • Investigate staff issues and provide feedback as appropriate to management and staff members. Perform staff coding audit, monitors performance and completes summary reports for management.
  • Ensure all coding and appeals are completed in a timely and accurate fashion. Be familiar with the specific coding/reimbursements requirements for each specialty.
  • Participate in the recruitment and evaluation of coding department staff members under direct supervision. Assist management in the formation of quarterly and yearly goals and other special projects as requested.
  • Adhere to internal and system-wide competencies, behavior policies and procedures to ensure efficient work processes. Actively participates in monthly coding meetings ad share ideas and suggestions for operational improvements. Maintain continuing education by reviewing updated coding related guidelines.
  • Supervise staff to ensure maximum productivity and accuracy of all coding and appeals under the control of the Revenue Cycle Coding Division.
  • Analyze work flow to maximize automation and follow up procedures. Engage in open communication with Revenue Cycle Education and Training personnel regarding information system, third party payer, and regulatory updates and/or enhancements and participate in the training of staff.
  • Perform Reimbursement Specialist duties for specifically selected accounts and approves all account adjustments.
  • Supervises staff including assignments and Kronos approval and signoff, as well as, assist with recruitment time off requests.
  • Assist management in the development and implementation of policies and procedure for Coding and Reimbursement. Provide backup coverage to support daily processes performed during staff vacations, absences, etc.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in a fashion which coincides with the service management philosophy of the UPMC including the demonstration of the basics of service excellence towards patients, visitors, staff, peers, physicians and other departments within the medical center.
  • Analyze work flow of all coding work queues to maximize automation and follow up procedures and to arrange all coding functions, based on staffing needs and/or department requirements.Monitor and ensure proper maintenance of logs and tracking systems as required by payers and UPMC policies.



  • Bachelor's degree and 1 year of relevant experience,
  • OR High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years of relevant experience required.
  • Graduate of an approved certified coding program preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Physician coding experience preferred for profee related positions.
  • Hospital coding experience preferred for technical related positions.
  • Proficient computer skills with MS excel knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPC or CPC specialty certification preferred (for profee coding responsibilities) or CCS/RHIT/RHIA (technical outpatient/inpatient coding) preferred.
