UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Developmental Specialist II (Matilda Theiss Therapeutic Nursery and Preschool)


The Matilda Thiess Therapeutic Nursery and Preschool serves children that have experienced trauma and do not thrive in a typical educational setting. The hire for this position will provide specialized attention and support to this population. This is an educational position and should be the focus of the person serving in this role. 

This program will be relocating to the South Side neighborhood in Pittsburgh early in 2023. The schedule for this position will be daylight hours. Those with an interest in early childhood, child development, or infant mental health are strongly encouraged to apply. 



  • Maintain consistent communication with educational leadership and direct supervisor. Report pertinent clinical and non-clinical needs or concerns to appropriate clinical and administrative leadership.
  • Oversee educational programing that aligns with curriculum, best practices, accreditation, licensing, regulatory and partnership standards. Consistently complete collaborative lessons that are individualized, developmentally appropriate and align with both educational and regulatory standards.
  • Provide direct educational oversight and leadership on the unit and actively support the educational leadership team.
  • Effectively engage clients in instructional sessions and model developmentally appropriate practices, including classroom management techniques and therapeutic interventions.
  • Accurately assess, record and communicate the developmental progress of students within assigned timelines. Utilize information to inform treatment by participating in regular treatment team meetings and communicating with guardians.
  • Actively engage in quality improvement projects and help to ensure inspection and audit readiness at all times.
  • Serve as an educational liaison between families, program, educational partners and therapeutic supports during which educational information is shared.
  • Oversee, train, coach and support educational staff, volunteers and practicum students. Track the timely completion of all educational documentation required from unit staff and provide support as needed. Lead weekly unit meetings and individual educator meetings. Support and maintain classroom scheduling. Provide relevant information for staff evaluations.
  • Actively participate in the accreditation, licensing, regulatory, partnership and educational enrollment process. Consistently adhere to, oversee assigned units? consistent adherence to, and maintain records/files that consistently adhere to accreditation, licensing, regulatory, partnership and best practice guidelines.
  • Actively participate in assigned unit meetings, trainings, staff meetings, treatment team, educational enrollment meetings, and supervisory sessions.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.



  • Masters degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Special Education, or Infant Mental Health,
    • OR: Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Special Education WITH 2 years of experience working in a NAEYC accredited organization.
  • Leadership experience that involves training, coaching, mentoring, or supervising other employees.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team.
  • Desire to work with young children and ability to sensitively respond to their needs.Alignment with the core values of UPMC.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
