Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

What can you Expect as an Informatics Nurse I?

The Informatics Nurse I has the responsibility and accountability of assessing and assisting in the investigation, development, and implementation of new technology as it relates to clinical practice, and serving as a liaison for end users and the Informatics division. Informatics Nurse I participates on project teams to ensure a successful, on time go live. You will develop and maintain project deliverables in accordance with application project goals and gather/communicate data to the Informatics Nurse II, DCOI or others as requested.

You will assume responsibility of continuous improvement projects and maintenance of the eRecord while also participating in research activities, submitting abstracts for presentation at local, regional and national conferences/professional meetings, submitting articles for publications, and/or participate in community/volunteer activities. You will participate upon request in system application validation.

The Informatics Nurse is empowered to engage appropriate health care personnel and eRecord team members as issues arise. Provides informatics mentorship at the unit/dept level helping to develop an interest in informatics. Maintains membership on, or consultation to, committees, work groups, or task forces as needed to communicate and facilitate the ongoing progress of development, implementation, and revision of the clinical information system. You will conduct education programs for all levels of end users in new and upgraded applications and you may educate at the system or local level as directed by the Informatics nurse II or DCOI. You will also assist in review of nursing policies to align with the eRecord technology.

As the Informatics Nurse, you will communicate by preparing and educating at all levels the various types of functionality impact to the end users work flow. This communication may include but not limited to the creation of articles for publications, uLearn, or any educational venue. You will demonstrate basic knowledge of system and local technology applications and the integration of these systems in regard to the impact to the end user and participate in Informatics Council, both local and system level. Assisting in preparation of agendas, handouts, and documents meeting minutes and actively participating in assigned committees and work groups with communication back to informatics team/DCOI is a core responsibility of the informatics Nurse. You will collect and assemble data for the purpose of evaluation of EHR projects while showing proficiency in running explorer menu reports.

You will objectively observe and educate end users utilizing unit rounds to identify ongoing educational needs regarding clinical documentation issues, patient care challenges, and software application upgrades while prioritizing issues and reporting them accordingly. The Informatics Nurse is an active participant in staff workflow assessment in clinical informatics projects and will provide support to DCOI by setting meetings and establishing groups for resolution of EHR assessment. You will function as an internal consultant, resource person, and educator to all levels of personnel in accordance with the objectives of the informatics department. Supporting change initiatives at the local and system level as directed by the Informatics Nurse II or DCOI is another responsibility.

Shifts/Hours: This position will work daylight hours with flexibility for business needs. There will be minimal travel for training or meetings.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing for Registered Nurses. BSN required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years acute care nursing experience required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Certification required within three (3) years of informatics employment (ANCC Nursing Informatics or CPHIMS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Act 34 with renewal
