Technical Writer - Temporary (Remote)



UPMC Health Plan is seeking a full-time Temporary Technical Writer to support the Marketing and Communications Department within the UPMC Insurance Services Division!

The Temporary Technical Writer will work standard hours, Monday through Friday, in a flexible hybrid or remote work arrangement!

The Technical Writer will use input from domain experts and knowledge gained from research to support platform content migration efforts within the department, and to overall produce documentation that provides value to the organization. Focusing on updating platform function information, this role will combine skills in layout, language, design, and an understanding of human perceptions to produce a comfortable, user-friendly end product.

The ideal candidate for this position will have previous writing and editing experience within the health insurance, benefits administration, health administration, technology, and/or other technical sector. Previous experience with health, well-being, and/or benefits administration platforms, such as Limeade or Businessolver, is a plus!


  • Participate in design sessions and discovery for documentation solutions of complex projects.
  • Ensure that assigned projects are completed within timelines and budget guidelines.
  • May be requested to establish project milestones and manage the interface components of the project plan for an enterprise model interface project.
  • Work with staff to understand the implementation of the changing platform function information, taking into consideration data, timing, and current business processes. 
  • Roll out documentation with minimal interruption to users and the institution.
  • Gather product design information and ascertain situational context from the analysts to supply documentation appropriate to the specifications of the task.
  • Formally document, present, and organize necessary design and documentation for the introduction of complex new products or process change at UPMC.
  • Extensively document the processes and procedures used to produce the technical communications.
  • Establish a sufficient foundation of background information to support the conceptual and analytical understanding of the specific task, as well as the understanding of how the task fits into the larger scope.
  • Effectively employ industry-standard documentation software, such as word processing, Web design, graphic design, and document management systems.
  • Offer interface design and ease-of-use suggestions where appropriate as systems or business processes are upgraded and/or replaced.
  • Document and trouble-shoot intermittent problems.
  • Develop processes to provide extensive self-editing, ensuring comprehensive technical reviews, as well as seeking customer feedback to continuously improve the documentation product.
  • Construct documentation procedures that result in the expected output and are able to be completed by the intended audience.
  • Adhere to industry and institutional standards, and establish departmental standards in written communications to ensure a consistent, predictable product design.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.



  • High School Diploma strongly preferred.
  • 6-10 years of applicable experience strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience in technology, health insurance, healthcare, benefits administration, and/or similar sector strongly preferred. 
  • Previous experience with Limeade, Businessolver, or other similar platforms is a plus. 
  • The ability to demonstrate mastery of communications in the form of technical manuals, procedural documentation, presentations, training materials, business communications, proposals, specifications, project plans, brochures, and websites strongly preferred.
  • Ability to design workflows and procedures strongly preferred.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Gather and analyze information skillfully.
  • Communicate changes and progress.
  • Work well and communicates clearly with others.
  • Follow instructions, responding to management direction.
  • Commit to extra hours of work when necessary to reach goals.
