UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the departmental activities in Laboratory Services to ensure the achievement of departmental and hospital-wide goals that are consistent with the values, mission, and strategic plan of the hospital. Work collaboratively with the medical staff and department directors to identify and develop programs and services that meet and/or exceed the standards of quality, service, and financial accountability.


  • Mentor departmental managers and support the professional growth of all levels of the department management staff.
  • Establish in collaboration with medical staff and director quality and service standards for the Service Center.
  • Work with all directors to achieve positive operating margins in cost and revenues.
  • Evaluate current services and develop business plans and operating objectives to address market needs.
  • Communicate and enforce hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the development and monitoring of operating plans and operating and capital budgets that support the service center strategic plan.
  • Ensure effective communication channels between medical staff, employees, directors, and managers.
  • Ensure consistent administration of standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide for departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards, guidelines, and quality assurance standards.
  • Develop a service center strategic plan that is consistent with and incorporated into the hospital's strategic plan.
  • Assess continuously operational processes to improve efficiency of individual patient case or episode of care and service center/department operations using the AIM methodology.
  • Identify and define customer market needs.
  • Ensure that all quality control tests and procedures are performed and documented.
  • Monitor and control operating cost per case within the service center.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship between medical staff, employees, directors, and managers to assure that issues are identified, evaluated, and resolved as a team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of safety procedures within the hospital and department.
  • Ensure that standards are maintained and that operating plans are implemented and monitored to address areas that do not meet standards.
  • Coordinate service center activities with the other service centers and departments to enhance integration and efficiency within the hospital system.
  • Develop, review, and approve departmental policies.



  • B.S. degree in Health Care or related field. Master's degree in health care or related field preferred.
  • 10 years total experience required:
    • 5years in clinical position(s) and 5years in middle management position(s).
  • Effectively communicate with individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds and interests.
  • Provide leadership and vision for the service center.
  • Utilize complex analytic tools.
  • Direct and evaluate service center/department operations.
  • Market and develop programs and services.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ASCP preferred.
