Description
Purpose:
Assists Pathologists in performance of adult and baby autopsies and processes gross specimens from surgery. Accountable to the Pathologists on medical issues.
Responsibilities:
- Adhere to all safety standards, policies and procedures related to the handling and disposal of specimens. Comply with universal precaution procedures. Assist with quality assurance functions as related to overall patient care.
- Remain abreast of policies, regulations, guidelines, techniques and procedures in anatomic pathology. Aid in the orientation of new residents and pathologists.
- Participate in and perform autopsy procedures. Perform pathology procedures independently receiving, dissecting and describing specimens. File and retrieve surgical and autopsy materials and maintains accurate records of all such activities. Photograph gross surgical and autopsy specimens.
- Perform service and maintenance of various tools and equipment.
Qualifications
- Completion of 4 year degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology or meets AAPA requirements for college credits defined in the science disciplines from an accredited institution.
- Analytical and technical ability to independently evaluate patient data and specimens.
- All procedures or job related tasks involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues.
- A potential for spills or splashes of biohazard substances does exist. Exposure to normal laboratory lights and noises and occasional exposure to toxic and carcinogenic chemicals.
