Purpose:
Responsible and accountable for integrating resources to provide holistic care as advocates for patients and families in the transport environment and the patient care units. The transport nurse maintains skills and knowledge sufficient to provide safe, effective and appropriate care to all ages of patients including neonates, infants, toddlers, children, adolescents and adults.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide input to decision making process on whether a physician should accompany the team, based on patient clinical data,
  • Utilize effective communication skills with all members of the organization.
  • Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting and supports the change and transition process to improve quality of care and the practice environment.
  • Promote nursing research via examining patient/family outcomes and seeking opportunities to find better ways to provide care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children if applicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, students and new staff.
  • Communicates with peers and management any safety hazards identified in the workplace.
  • Maintain care of patient in an environment when a fire or safety issue arises such as a hard landing, fire in helicopter, or vehicle problems on the road. Must be familiar with survival skills and tactics should an unforeseen disaster occur.
  • Evaluate patient and family outcomes in response to interventions and education.
  • Provides detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to effectively guide them through the episode of care as well as transition to another level of care and/or home.
  • Practices solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
  • Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Initiate and facilitate the educational process in terms comprehensible to patients and families.
  • Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues, may serve as a perceptor.
  • Assist in coordinating with insurance carriers to obtain financial authorization for transfers.
  • Function as a team leader when a physician is not present on the transport. Assess patient following written protocols, communicate to CHP and referring staff, and formulate a plan of care. Exercise independent judgment when sudden clinical changes occur. Effectively deal with parents and referring hospital staff.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.
  • Ensure patient safety by providing an equipped, safe, and functional physical environment to achieve quality patient care. Maintain knowledge of the safety procedures for the transport vehicles such as helicopter, fixed wing plane, and ambulance including crew and patient safety.
  • Contribute to Hospital and unit operations by assisting in the documentation, data collection of and entering statistics concerning every transport. Assume responsibility of team function during shift.
  • Creates an environment of open dialogue, inqiuiry and continuous development by asking for feedback and improving practice.

 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Professional Nursing.
  • Minimum 2 years pediatric/or neonatal
    • or ED critical care experience in order to acquire an advanced comprehensive of physiology, pathophysiology and psychology of the child.
  • CHP Trauma course within 6 months of hire.
  • NALS, PALS within 1 year of hire.
  • Special skills and abilities
  • Required: Analytical ability necessary to assess and evaluate parent's condition and utilize the nursing process and professional judgment in planning and providing comprehensive care to patients according to the child's functional development level.
  • Ability to integrate patient related data from various sources into the plan of care and appraisal of condition.
  • Completion of requirements needed to function in the transport nurse's advanced clinical role.
  • This includes didactic, clinical and OR rotation.
  • Ability to successfully complete a clinical written test with 85% or better competency.
  • Successfully complete Operating Room clinical rotation for airway management.
  • Knowledge to perform the following procedures: endotracheal intubation, intraosseous cannulation, needle thoracotomy, tapping a VP shunt, umbilical vein cannulation and advanced surgical airways if needed.
  • All applicants for employment as a member of the Transport Team Flight Program must meet specific requirements: a) Height may not exceed 6 ft. 2 in. b) Weight may not exceed 240 lb. - hired before January 1, 2000. c) Weight may not exceed 210 lb.-if hired after January 1, 2000.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
