Description
UPMC Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a Full-Time Optician Floater role based in their Mercy Hospital location and will move to the new, cutting-edge UPMC Vision Institute - Mercy Pavilion when construction is completed in Spring 2023.
The Optician will float between UPMC's six locations as needed. Mileage will be reimbursed per UPMC's mileage reimbursement policy.
This position works Monday through Friday, Daylight Hours, No Weekends/Evenings/Holidays!
Three years of Optician experience required.
Purpose:
Responsible for fitting eyeglasses frames and selecting lenses for the spectacles that are appropriate for the patient's cosmetic, vocational and lifestyle needs. Finishing/ edging lenses to fit patient frames.
Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of the different brands of lenses and lens materials currently available as well as willingness to keep current with new lens technologies is needed.
- Understand insurance as it relates to vision and eyewear.
- Recommend eyeglass frames, lenses, lens coatings, and ancillary products after considering the prescription and customer's needs and facial features.
- Measure customer's eyes, including pupillary and vertex distance as well as making all required measurements for bifocals, trifocals or progressive addition lenses.
- Frame adjustments using a variety of specialized instruments.
- After the glasses are made, the optician must verify that the lenses have been ground to specifications.
- Use a lensometer to verify prescriptions and edge lenses.
- Instruct patients in adapting to, wearing of, and caring for eyewear. Process necessary paperwork for vision specific carriers as well as accepting payments for materials as needed.
- Maintain patient optical records.
- Answer phone inquiries.
- Prepare work orders for the ophthalmic lab so that the lenses can be processed including work orders include information on lens prescriptions, lens sizes and types, material, frame information, papillary distance and vertex distance.
- Follow rules and regulations regarding dispensing laws and office policies and procedures.
- Edge and finish lenses according to specifications provided by the prescribing doctor.
Qualifications
- High school graduate and minimum 3 years experience working as an optician required.
- Optician license preferred.
