UPMC Global Care helps make the journey of seeking treatment for a complex medical diagnosis more convenient with complementary services to help patients and their families navigate the UPMC network. Our team provides financial services and hospitality and logistical services to help supplement UPMC’s world-renowned clinical programs.
Purpose:
Under the general direction of the SVP, COO, UPMC International, the Director, Traveling Patient Services develops, plans and executes market development strategies and tactics to attract international and domestic patients from outside our core markets to UPMC sites globally. Coordinates the operations of the clinical care coordination and concierge services and serves as primary fiscal liaison for adult traveling patients, e.g., foreign embassies, international and domestic insurance carriers, international institutions, and self-pay patients. This role will coordinate UPMC Adult Global Care services for domestic locations and, in coordination with in-country leadership, for international sites. The Director will oversee development and organization of a Second Medical Opinion service. Partners with domestic and international leaders as appropriate. Manages staff of several direct and indirect reports.
Responsibilities:
- Acts as a liaison to the International Division to ensure alignment between adult specialties and broader divisional activities, including business development and consulting services, as well as to ensure clinical specialist and subject matter expert engagement.
- Develop and implement strategies to grow the UPMC Global Care business for traveling patients seeking care in the United States, Italy, and Ireland from current and new markets.
- Work in coordination with international insurers and embassies to develop agreements to increase patient volume and ensure agreeable financial terms.
- Develop and implement strategies to grow the UPMC Traveling Patient Service business for domestic patients seeking care from outside our core market.
- Work closely with clinical departments, the Hospital Services Division, and the Community and Ambulatory Services Divisions to identify ways that improve access, coordination, and efficiency of care for specific patient populations.
- Develop working group and recommendations to establish Second Medical Opinion service.
- Work closely with the Sr. Director, Pediatric International Services and Digital Health, as well as the Finance Team, to establish and/or review pricing and accounts payable.
- Lead collaboration with finance, operations, and hospitality services to ensure project success, achievement of goals, and ensure optimal customer experience.
- Collaborate with corporate marketing to implement marketing strategies and tactics related to new business development and service awareness.
- Develop annual operating and capital budget for assigned areas.
- Oversee the selection, training, and performance evaluation of assigned staff; recommends merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies.
Qualifications
10 years of experience in business, marketing, finance, or operations. Experience in international business, patient access, and concierge/customer service strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Ability to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally. Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple functions and successfully lead a team of direct and indirect reports. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; additional languages spoken preferred. Strong analytical ability necessary to oversee preparation and review of financial analyses.
