UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. Patient Care Technician - Senior - Emergency Department

Description

The Emergency Department is a state-of-the-art, 22-bed Level 3 Trauma unit that opened to the public in 2014. The ED handles critically ill patients and other emergency medical issues, including OB/GYN, geriatric, and medical-surgical including bariatric, orthopedic, oncology, and stroke patients. The majority of ED nurses at Magee are trained to perform forensic exams for sexual assault as well. Patient volume and acuity are variable and can change quickly, making the ED an extremely fast-paced, unpredictable environment where rapid problem-solving is necessary to address evolving needs and priorities. 

What can you Expect as a Patient Care Technician?

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.

The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Shifts/Hours: This position will work 8 hours per week on a rotating shifts schedule including some weekend and holiday requirements

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED Required and one of the following:
    • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of PCT role; must perform all PCT Advanced Skills
      • Advanced Skills (required as needed based on unit need & patient population): Phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrythmia Course Completion (for telemetry and ED units)
    • 1 year of general healthcare experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation
    • 1 year of general healthcare experience (defined above) and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire
  • EMT or Paramedic or enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred
  • Nursing student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

*Other clearances may be required based on department of hire
