UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. Description

The part time Safety Officer will provide safety, security, and fire safety related functions throughout UPMC Western Behavioral Health of the Alleghenies (WBHA) on a daily basis. The Safety Officer will work Monday - Thursday and Fridays as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct searches according to system and department policy regarding customer service responsibilities and maintaining paperwork and property appropriately.
  • Must meet mandatory education and annual competency requirements for the position, to include age-specific competencies.
  • Perform continuous amounts of hands on physical restraint techniques necessary in an attempt to control violent, combative patients and maintain a safe environment with respect to age-specific competencies and guidelines. In conformance with seclusion and restraint policies Comprehensive Crisis Management and positive approaches training.
  • Provide relief coverage for safety systems clerks and parking lot attendants as assigned by Manager(s).
  • Conduct proactive, continuous safety, security and fire safety patrols throughout the facility and parking areas. Document and report any unsafe conditions as well as any security violations.
  • Provide assistance as requested to clinical staff in the care and safety of patients, staff or visitors who are uncooperative. Respond to all such calls of assistance in a professional manner in accordance with facility standards and guidelines with respect to age-specific guidelines and competencies.
  • Perform any and all assignments as directed by Manager(s); to include a daily review of e-mail, grease board, and any other required communications.
  • Administer assistance during fires, medical emergencies or disaster drills or any other crisis type situations. Work closely with appropriate law enforcement, fire and medical authorities when necessary.
  • Develop and maintain a level of professionalism under the accepted standards of the Institute to include proper dress, radio communication, and overall service excellence work ethic with patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Prepare and complete all mandatory and recommended training programs as per departmental guidelines.
  • Provide escort service for patients, staff, and visitors, as necessary or as directed.
  • Initiate and investigate any reports of incidents to include theft, suspicious activity, vandalism, personnel safety, patient related issues, and any other areas considered to be of importance in the day-to-day operation of the Institute.
  • Conduct tests of various alarm systems, equipment, etc. to include fire extinguishers, security alarms, fire alarm system, and others as assigned by Manager(s).
  • May be responsible to accept, store and transport patient personal belongings including medications as per UPMC Policy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year experience in safety, security or related healthcare field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience considered.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients.
  • Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Act 235 with Firearms OR Act 235 without Firearms - All officers hired without a valid Act 235 must complete the 235 certifications within their first 6 months of hire or placement and have process completed within 9 months of hire. Must meet audio and visual standards outlined in Act 235 at time of hire. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation certification required within 30 days of hire. Successfully pass UPMC Physical Fitness Standard prior to hire.
