Clinical Nurse Manager (Pathways)

UPMC Western Behavioral Health is hiring a full-time Clinical Nurse Manager to help lead Pathways, a long-term structured residence program. This position will work, Monday – Friday Daylight; rotating on-call; and will require flexibility to fill in nursing needs (shifts) as needed.

The Clinical Nurse Manager will work within a 16-unit residential program for mainly schizophrenic adults transitioning back into the community.  Will be responsible for managing 5 full-time nurses and 2 casual nurses.  Additional responsibilities will include working closely with the Psychiatrist on special projects as well as enhanced medical improvements for the patient and patient care.  Will also work closely with Program Manager to assist with overall program development and program management. 

This position allows for flexibility to work from home, as well as have the opportunity to have patient-facing, and participate in patient events. The hire for this position will be reporting directly to the Director of Clinical Care Services and will have a dotted line to the Program Manager. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assesses learning needs of select staff and groups of staff and documents plans for intervention. Participates as instructor in select staff development and educational programs through the Office of Nursing Administration. Coordinates student-nursing experiences within the Business Unit with affiliating instructors and unit student coordinators. Participates in the collection and dissemination of research information. Participates in research activities pertinent to the unit program. Coordinates peer review process of nursing staff. Participates in the peer review process and consultations. Other duties as assigned.
  • Attends staff development educational programs and conferences as determined by identified learning needs. Completes the responsibilities of the position accurately and efficiently. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of organizational system's theories. Demonstrates the ability to make decisions based upon sound administrative knowledge and problem-solving skills. Demonstrates the ability to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical programs. Demonstrates the ability to conduct effective collaboration with all disciplines. Demonstrates the ability to develop and maintain accurate and concise clinical and administrative records. Demonstrates the ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethics. Identifies both clinical and non-clinical need or problems affecting nursing services and takes necessary action to resolve them.
  • Critically examines ongoing nursing care requirements to determine projected milieu programming and staffing needs. Monitors select ANCM?s ongoing administrative assessment skills. Participates with unit leadership personnel and Office of Nursing Administration staff in the development of milieu programming and nursing practice requirements. Develops comprehensive goals, objectives, and annual plans for nursing development. Maintains ultimate responsibility for the delivery of nursing care for all patients on the assigned units. Revises milieu programming according to the patient population needs. Demonstrates model patient care delivery through regular role modeling with patient. Ensures that members of the nursing staff maintain the Clinical Standards of Practice, Care and Performance as defined by Office of Nursing Administration staff. Participates with unit leadership personnel in the evaluation of milieu programs.
  • Administrates the selection of nursing staff utilizing sound concepts of interviewing and established criteria. Supervises the preparation of work schedules and bi-weekly time sheets in accordance with the Business Unit payroll policies and procedures. Provides supervision to the nursing staff inclusive of their performance of clinical duties, attendance, work habits, participation in staff development, etc. Completes annual performance appraisals and learning plans for select nursing staff. Initiates special administrative projects upon approval. Delegates patient care assignments such as primary nurse or charge nurse responsibilities to members of the nursing staff based on competency level. Conducts disciplinary actions as necessary in consultation with Leadership or delegate. Critically examines the bi-weekly schedule for effective clinical planning and authorization of overtime pay integrating clinical needs with budgetary constraints. Conducts quality improvement activities regularly and utilizes findings to strengthen nursing care delivery. Ensures compliance with and participates in all pertinent regulatory reviews. Administrates the unit budget, expenditures for effective patient care within budgetary constraints.
  • Demonstrates a system perspective in directing activities related to nursing services. Maintains annual certification in CPR, OSHA, Crisis Prevention and Crash Cart Review/MERT, mandatory SDU's and core curriculum requirements. Adheres to the ANA Standards of Nursing, the ANA Professional Code for Nurses, Business Unit. Standards of Practice, Care and Performance, Nursing Policies and Procedures, Clinical Service Manual Policies and Procedures and the Nurse Practice Act. Maintains appropriate dress and grooming for the position as determined by the supervisor. Must be physically capable of providing direct total physical care to individuals with co-occurring substance use disorder and medical, including lifting, supporting, and pushing and pulling equipment, such as wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Diploma, associate BSN or Master's degree in nursing, psychology, social work, education or equivalent.
  • Masters preferred.
  • One-year of relevant clinical experience in a psychiatric setting.
  • Experience in family, group, and individual therapy and previous management experience preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • On-call responsibilities may be present.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required by the Business Unit.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current licensure to practice within that profession is required. CPR is required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
