UPMC Health Plan is seeking a Strategy Consultant to join the Department of Population Health Analytics. This department focuses on solving the big problems in Population Health Management. How can we meaningfully analyze the entirety of our population while maintaining our person-centered approach to health care services? How can we allocate our resources to best serve the needs of our population in a cost-effective manner? How should we identify and assess risk? How can we operationalize our insights, learn from them, and improve upon them?
The below computer competencies are highly preferred:
- Extract & Transform Data using SQL, R, or Python
- Advanced Analytics/Data Science using R or Python
- Data Visualization using PowerBI, Tableau, R or Python
This position also requires the following:

- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, and forge strong interpersonal relationships within the department, with other departments, and with external audiences.

This position will work Monday through Friday standard daylight hours.
Responsibilities:
- Produce project deliverables-presentations, business plans, etc. Translate teams' discussions and decisions into effective presentations (tailored to audience and purpose). Synthesize. Coordinate activities to ensure timely completion of deliverables. Coordinate with other Departments and business units to ensure strategies address the full continuum of issues. Communicate and collaborate with internal constituents to ensure coordinated and effective strategies are pursued while work is streamlined. Maintain rigorous analytical and data synthesis skills; in particular develop decision support models to guide strategy and key operational decisions.
- Administrative. Maintain Department's infrastructure (e.g., library of business model options). Complete Department and other assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely and effective manner.
- Manage a portfolio of multiple projects and clients. Proactively identify and appropriately frame projects in response to market/industry dynamics, business unit priorities, and system-wide priorities. Frame and integrate these projects with business unit activities. Manage projects from inception (business planning) through implementation (start-up operations). Complete projects in a timely manner.
- Develop and mentor staff. Mentor and develop the Department's analysts; develop skills and refine management acumen.
- Support senior executives (VP of Population Health, Chief Clinical Officer). Understand current organizational priorities and objectives. Complete special projects as assigned.
- Work with Health Plan clinical operations executives to develop and start initiatives, as well as critically evaluate and refine existing programs. Ensure client needs are met. Identify and document new industry and market trends. Develop new and improved ways to convey market and external dynamics to diverse audiences.
Qualifications
- Master's level degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or a quantitative field of study (e.g., mathematics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.) with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, planning, business development, quantitative decision support, finance) required
- OR a Bachelor degree with 5 years of experience or completion of an internal rotation program. Prior experience should include project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); advanced analytics (manipulating complex datasets, interpreting data, communicating complex analytical concepts in easy-to-understand ways, etc.); and business development (e.g., writing/authoring business plans for new operations).
- Experience with Excel, SQL, R and/or Python, PowerBI and/or Tableau strongly preferred.
- Experience in a consulting, investment banking, corporate or competitive strategy, or service line management environment is preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of healthcare industry is required.
- Exceptional Excel and PowerPoint skills are required.
- Due to fluid nature and visibility of the department's work, flexible work hours are required and often exceed 50 hours per week.
