The WorkSource Nurse Intern may perform assigned tasks which directly contribute to the care of patients and other patient related services as directed and under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse.

  • Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery including, but not limited to: messenger functions, ordering, charging/crediting supplies, set up of patient care equipment within the scope of the Nurse Intern position, stocking patient rooms and unit supply areas.
  • Attend health team conferences.
  • Communicate patients condition to physician and other key members of the health care team
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Constructively receives feedback and direction.
  • Contribute to the universal unit activities, including but not limited to responding to call lights and telephone, passing meal trays and patient transports.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care.
  • Deliver patient nourishments, fills water pitchers and distributes patient mail.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the impact of his/her behavior on the efficient functioning of the department/organization.
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Draw from previous learning and focus on accomplishment of tasks required for the provision of patient care.
  • Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department.
  • Establish appropriate and effective communication strategies.
  • Identifies and communicates learning needs to their preceptor.
  • Identify need and/or provides patient/family education.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery including but not limited to: completing safety checks, keeping the department and patient rooms clean and organized, cleaning department specific equipment, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, keeping hallways clear of equipment and returning equipment.
  • May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints.
  • Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Perform patient care skills working with preceptor (RN) in a safe manner according to policy and procedure and as delineated in the established Nurse Intern skills checklist.
  • Prior to performing new or challenging skills within the scope of the Nurse Intern role, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures
  • Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.
  • Respond directly to patient requests and appropriately communicates patient needs or changes in condition to RN preceptor.
  • Respond within the scope of the Nursing Assistant role to emergent situations.
  • Seek out appropriate nursing, physician or other health care team intervention.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Suggest and supports changes within the department/organization.
  • Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs.
  • Transport, transfer and position patients safely.
  • Under the direction of the RN Preceptor, complete initial admission assessments, daily assessments and discharge plans.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of Junior Year or equivalent of Professional Nursing Program.
  • The Nurse Intern must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the area of the patients served on their assigned unit, and know the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Cares for patients under the direction of the RN preceptor.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance or Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
