The Systemwide Resources (SR) team; part of UPMC Corporate Services is actively seeking Operating Room Trained ( OR) Surgical Technologists interested in joining our OR team.

Our Full time Surgical Technologist staff, known as the OR Surgical Technologist SWAT team, travels to various UPMC facilities as needed for Short or Long term assignments. These Surgical Technologists work in Operating Rooms within a hospital in order to support patient care during leaves of absences, for high volume coverage, or to support the Operating Room while vacancies are filled. SWAT Surgical Technologists function as an integral part of the assigned OR’s team, working a variety of shifts and assignments. These Surgical Technologists must be able to scrub within two specialty areas.

Systemwide Resources (SR) SWAT team positions receive full-time benefits as well as increased compensation @ $23.50/hr to reward their flexibility. While on assignments in our many UPMC facilities our Surgical Technologists gain rare, impressive, and highly desirable professional experiences and build widely varied skill sets. 

The SWAT OR surgical technologist will be utilized to fill shifts in all OR areas of high need. SWAT OR surgical technologist must be willing to work at all UPMC facilities and accept regular rotational assignments as determined by a SWAT team supervisor. 

The SWAT OR surgical technologist will not be required to be on call, otherwise chosen by the participant and approved by the Unit Director and SWAT team supervisor. Off shift coverage may be required in facilities that have extended need for shift coverage.

  • The SWAT OR surgical technologist has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of OR surgical technology, under the general supervision of a registered nurse. 
  • The SWAT OR surgical technologist will assist the surgical team and work on complex surgical assignments. The SWAT OR Surgical Technologist, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies competent clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality care outcomes.
  • After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
  • Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly.
  • During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site under the supervision of the surgeon and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.


  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of current surgical technician experience (ambulatory surgery center experience is excluded) that demonstrates advanced knowledge of at least 2 surgical specialties. SWAT OR Surgical Technologist must agree to be available to work 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period and will follow the scheduling requirements of the operating room department assigned. 
  • Functions independently in two specialty areas of surgical services. 
  • Must be able to independently scrub for major general, major vascular and orthopedic surgeries. 
  • The ability to scrub in any specialty is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Older Adult Protective Services Act
