Below is a general outline of a Software Engineer position at UPMC.   • Application Development Cycle - Show fundamental knowledge of application development cycle.
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Design - Follow established design patterns and has awareness of user experience standards. Responsible for individual components of design.
  • Integration - Responsible for less complex components of integration within a module.
  • Self Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with more senior members of team, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from senior team members for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Troubleshooting - Show the ability to resolve basic issues and offer input on issue resolution.
  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of information technology fundamental tools and concepts (SDLC) of one of the information technology professional disciplines and applies that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within a UPMC department or function.
  • Provide technology and operational support to members of management as necessary. This includes the development of detailed project plans for all major requests.
  • Systems Analysis: Drafts technical requirements and designs specific modules or programs within a larger system under direction of an experienced Systems Analyst. Assists with creating prototype designs for low-risk projects. Documents existing workflow/current business processes. May use CASE tools.


  • Prefers Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited university, or has acquired core software development skills and knowledge via practical experience
  • Typically has familiarity with the work through education or practical experience.
  • Experience with complex development environments, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed software deliverable
  • Experience in developing on cross-functional systems
  • Deep knowledge of programming Basic understanding of the SDLC Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations
  • Ability to work independently and in a team based environment Proficient in both oral and written communication
  • Experience with the following technologies are strongly preferred: .Net, ASP.Net, C#, Soap UI, C, C++, Java, Python, Flash, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JQuery, Unix, Linux, SQL, TFS and SOA.
