The VP of Product Management performs a critical role in the leadership and development of UPMC’s Population Health Management (PHM) technology application (HealthPlaNET) under the direct guidance of the Vice President, Business Alignment and Transformation with matrixed relationship to the Vice President, Strategic Digital Health Innovations. In this capacity, the executive will lead product and technical innovation and the development of existing and new software that designs and supports the creation of enhanced clinical workflows, offers decision support and other intelligent tools to aid the transformation of the clinical and financing services that yield consumer and business value. In conjunction with the other members of the HealthPlaNET leadership team, the VP of Product Management will propel the vision and development of HealthPlaNET, build customer relations across the care continuum, and contribute to the strategy and optimization of operational processes.


Additionally, the VP of Product Management will lead strategic alignment initiatives across all Health Plan business lines for new product or program enhancement integration. Additionally, ensure efficient request and prioritization processes that support metrics and ROI evaluation and that demonstrate impact, value and progress. Concurrently, establish strategic development road maps with internal and commercial considerations to advance key clinical modular components of the PHM technology including primary care, post -acute, hospital and payer. Further develop the intel for managing clinical service at financial risk.


The VP of Product Management will have specific responsibility for product development and innovation to prepare for future models of risk sharing while also ensuring the application’s functionality meets short and medium term clinical, operational, and business needs. The VP will develop, hire, and manage the product development team and ensure the team is open, creative, and responsive to customer needs while attendant to the broader vision of a smart technology that connects the care continuum. The incumbent will productively challenge current state assumptions, support rapid-cycle design and development methodologies, and will identify critical external resources and partnerships that can accelerate progress toward the HealthPlaNET vision, support UPMC’s strategic objectives, and/or supplement resources to adapt to changing needs.


The successful candidate will have demonstrated successful product innovations and be committed, flexible, diplomatic and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, complex, matrixed organization. You will work as part of a dynamic team that brings together expertise in many disciplines including clinical service, knowledge management, business development, customer innovation, and information technology, to produce highly specialized software solutions to meet the rapidly advancing needs of healthcare today.



Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and manage product development and software innovation team responsible for facilitating the transformation of clinical work processes along the payer and provider care continuum and the supporting, creative technology requisite to enable this advance.
  • Engage in strategic and clinical workflow discussions, voicing sound technical opinions.
  • Lead strategic alignment initiatives across business lines for new product or program enhancement integration designs
  • Support population health models and pharmacy models design, integration and implementations that includes technical best practices for development
  • Support and incorporate the advancement of decision support, analytical and intelligent processing tools in partnership with clinical research scientists, economists and analysts.
  • Contribute to and follow established HealthPlaNET and UPMC strategic roadmaps.
  • Present updates, defend priorities, and illustrate product vision for Senior Leadership.
  • Monitor and evaluate market and competitive trends and forces and utilize insight to inform priorities and strategic roadmap contributions.
  • Evaluate and identify opportunities for UPMC portfolio and partnership companies to derive value for the UPMC IDFS and the future commercial potential of the PHM technologies.
  • Build strong, productive working relationships across internal teams and UPMC Payer and Provider customers to inform development and design activities for value based care models.
  • Infuse collaboration, innovation, rapid cycle design, and prototyping into the transformation and development teams.
  • Synthesize and incorporate UPMC clinical, business, and strategic priorities into product offerings and product development schedules.
  • Serve as a key contributor in the development of the HealthPlaNET vision as marketplace leader for PHM technology for the UPMC IDFS and Commercial markets.
  • Balance internal and commercial priorities to optimize value and product offerings.
  • Ensure efficient request and prioritization processes that support metrics and ROI evaluation and that demonstrate impact, value and progress. 
  • Establish a strategic development road map with internal and commercial considerations to advance key clinical modular components of the PHM technology including primary care, post-acute, hospital, and payer. Further develop the intel for managing clinical service at financial risk.
  • Build innovation portfolios specifying incubators, targeted market segments, pricing sensitivity analysis and revenue/ROI projections over: a three- to five- year development/implementation cycle. Assemble innovation advisory groups, ideation groups, and development teams to champion each modules.
  • Recommend potential partners and or contributors that catalyze or supplement portfolio development.
  • Generate new perspectives, frameworks or innovations and challenge the status quo. 
  • Be able to clearly articulate the value proposition and promise of the application and its modular components to help define and guide the creative development of all marketing and advertising material.

 

Qualifications

  • Masters or Bachelors degree in a health care, IT, innovation, business or related field required.
  • Advanced degree preferred. Clinical focus preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years professional experience including 10+ of each of the following: health care insurance or health care industry experience product development experience management experience with preference for staffing, team building and blending external and internal resources to achieve objectives
  • Demonstrated skills in business development 8 plus years of related clinical experience in workflow development, care management service, and clinical software development
  • Demonstrated success at building productive relationships in complex organizations
  • Creative thinker and problem-solver-ability to come up with new ideas and messaging concepts that meet current and future business objectives
  • Demonstrated success in defining and launching excellent software products, health care and analytics products preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate collaborative solutions to complex multi-disciplinary problems and articulate features and benefits to appropriate executive management audiences
  • Expertise in creating and building organizational support and developing and implementing new programs including the ability to manage multiple initiatives and projects varying in scope and complexity
  • Proven ability to drive results, lead cross-functional teams, influence others and foster collaboration
  • Proven expertise combining data analytics with qualitative and quantitative research to create actionable insights
  • Advanced knowledge of payer-provider risk sharing models required
  • A genuine passion for transforming the clinical health system and developing population health management software demonstrated through significant past projects
  • Working knowledge of healthcare regulatory, privacy, and security standards and how their evolution will impact product requirements
  • Strong knowledge of clinical work standards, process logic, guidelines, best practices
  • Experience in software innovation
  • Superior communication and analytical abilities required
  • Experience in working with developing clinical software for commercial clients
  • Experience working in a regulated, healthcare and financing environment
  • Experience in working with software companies and related innovators
