The Pediatric Clinical Pharmacist-Antimicrobial Stewardship is responsible for the provision of safe, effective, appropriate, and cost-efficient medication therapy to patients in the area of Infectious Disease. This role will assist in the planning, organizing, and monitoring of the delivery of pharmacy services with emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship activities.

  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data and monitors the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP), which may include information on antibiotic prescribing and resistance patterns.
  • Regularly reporting information on the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP), including information on antibiotic use and resistance to doctors, nurses, and relevant staff. 
  • Educating practitioners, staff, and patients on the antimicrobial program, which may include information about resistance and optimal prescribing. 
  • Assists with ASP program development.
  • Actively Participates in the professional growth and development of new employees, students, and residents. 
  • Assist in ensuring departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards, guidelines and quality assurance standards.
  • Assist in preceptorship of University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy students.
  • Assume responsibilities, tasks and staffing duties as a dispensing Pharmacist as deemed necessary by the Director of Pharmacy. This may include weekends, and the staffing of any assigned shift.
  • Collaborate in the coordination of the staff's clinical development. Provide continuing education materials and lectures and provides input to the performance evaluation of other clinical staff members.
  • Edit and update the Pediatric Drug Therapy Handbook and Formulary.
  • Ensure patient safety through ensuring the monitoring of adverse drug effects via patient chart review; notify physicians of occurrences; make recommendations to physicians for drug dosing in patients with compromised renal and/or liver function.
  • Participate in the Adverse Drug Reaction Program including evaluating and reporting adverse drug reactions.
  • Participate in the Medication Usage Evaluation Program including planning, research, design, and evaluation and reporting results.
  • Participate in the department's Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement Programs.
  • Perform cost reduction measures.
  • Provide drug information to various patient care departments as necessary.
  • Provide pharmaceutical care and monitor drug therapy to affect positive patient outcomes.
  • Provide professional education to medical, nursing and pharmacy staff members and students.
  • Serve on Hospital or School of Pharmacy committees as requested.


  • Graduate from an accredited school of Pharmacy. B.S. degree in Pharmacy. 
  • Pharm D. is preferred.
  • Two years of hospital pharmacy experience is required.
  • Completion of PGY-1 Residency in a Pediatric Pharmacy Practice is preferred. 
  • A minimum of one year of experience in Infection Disease is preferred. 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Pennsylvania Pharmacist License
  • One of the following qualifications specific to Infectious Disease is preferred: 
    • BCIDP (Board Certified Infectious Disease Pharmacist)
    • SIDP Certification (Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists)
    • MAD-ID Certification (Making A Difference in Infectious Diseases)
    • ID Residency
    • BCPPS (Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist)
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
