5E/5F is a very unique, fast paced unit encompassing pediatric and adult med/surg patients with cardiac monitoring capability.  We care for patients from 30 days old and beyond.  We are a split unit with each section caring for specific patient populations.  On 5E we care for acute and chronic, high acuity medical patients along with surgical patients.  5E is the preferred unit for urology patients, ears, nose & throat (ENT) patients, and general medical and surgical patients. 5F is the preferred unit for our bariatric weight loss patients, low acuity medical or surgical patients, plastic surgical patients, and pediatrics.  Our unit requires specific certifications for the pediatric patients including PALS and Trauma Nurse Course to care for low acuity trauma patients.     


We have a great combination of experienced and newer nurses.  Fresh faces and new ideas along with time tested knowledge makes our unit a great place to learn and gain skills.  This fast-paced unit provides skills in time management, delegation, and organization.  Come join our growing team!!!!





RN Casual Evening Night rotation with Varied days and 8 and 12 hour shifts prn(Med/Surg - Pediatrics)(SEIU)(Posted 12/1/16)


UPMC Altoona is hiring a casual Registered Nurse to help support the Med/Surg- Pediatrics Unit. As a member of this team you will provide direct and indirect care to patients utilizing the nursing process, provide leadership for the nursing team, and contribute to the education of a variety of members of the staff and students. This is a casual RN position with varied hours and days. 

  • Adheres to universal precautions. Identified potential problems and initiates appropriate measures. 
  • Identifies environmental factors which deter effective patient care, initiates action, and contributes ideas towards resolution.
  • Assesses patient and family needs and documents this information appropriately in the computer or on appropriate form. 
  • Reassesses patient every eight hours, and, as necessary.
  • Completes annual competency validation activities.
  • Complies with established occupational exposure policies.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in providing patient care.
  • Engages the medical staff and other professionals in discussion of patient care problems resulting in mutually developed plans of care.
  • Revises plan of care, as necessary based on daily evaluation of patient.
  • Evaluates patient's outcome based on previously defined goals. 
  • Evaluates and documents the patient's response to care, teaching, and treatment.
  • Utilizes nursing care protocols and standards.
  • Carries out and documents procedures according to Hospital Policy.  
  • Performs technical skills safely and accurately, and demonstrates a working knowledge of equipment.
  • Transcribes and implements physicians' orders appropriately.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the physiological basis for the nursing care delivery. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medication and IV therapy administration according to policy. 
  • Initiates and coordinates health teaching for patients and families/significant other based on individual needs.
  • Maintains proficiency and competency in point of care testing as defined in the evaluation criteria established by the laboratory.
  • Includes the patient and family/significant other in the formulation of the plan of care. 
  • Prioritizes patient's needs appropriately. 
  • Plans, conducts, and documents patient care conferences. 
  • Maintains a current plan of care for each assigned patient. 
  • Utilizes appropriate community agencies and other health care professionals in planning care.
  • Serves as a consultant to other members of the health-care team.
  • Utilizes Bed Management System, Alpha, CPOE, and all other computer systems appropriately.


  • 2 years or more of relevant nursing experience required.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, BSN preferred.
  • Must hold a current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Pennsylvania. 
  • Must satisfactorily complete the Nursing Department's orientation program and probationary period. 
  • Must complete NIHSS education prior to end of orientation period, if required.  
  • Must complete the Trauma Nurse Course within one year of hire.
  • Must maintain eight stroke and six trauma competencies per year.
  • Must attend Trauma Symposium yearly. 
  • ACLS preferred, BLS required. PALS obtained with one year of hire. 
  • Telemetry and or Critical care experience preferred.
  • Current proficiency preferred in skilled initiation and maintenance of IV Therapy in all age levels. 
  • Previous experience preferred in initiation and maintenance of Intravascular Access devices. 
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting methods and prior experience in administration of Cathflo for poorly functioning or clotted Central venous lines and ports preferred. 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Certified Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Registered Nurse
