Perform technical and specialized work involved in the administration of retirement, health and welfare benefits via the PeopleSoft Human Resource Information System. Interpret and ensure compliance with laws, contractual arrangements and corporate policy.

  • Assist in the development, design and communication of benefit procedures and programs. To include working with management to implement and conduct open enrollment program, as well as, special enrollment programs related to retirement, health and welfare, COBRA, and voluntary benefits as assigned.
  • Develop training for new programs for other benefit team members as assigned.
  • Establish processes that are efficient and effective in delivering quality service to staff members. Assist with the implementation of design and administrative changes for retirement and health and welfare plans.
  • Interact with and advise Employee Service Center staff on a range of legal, regulatory and compliance questions and concerns related to UPMC's benefit plans.
  • Interface with external brokers and vendors and ERISA counsel on the administration and compliance of UPMC's benefit plans.
  • Oversee and administer ERISA reporting requirements for UPMC benefit programs, including Form 5500 and/or other compliance forms and matters, such as, the administration of domestic relations orders.
  • Oversee the administration, coordination with ESC, HRIS, external vendors, etc. as needed for specific benefit programs as assigned. Could include administration of retirement calculations, COBRA administration, health care eligibility coordination, legacy retiree benefits, student verifications, eligibility oversight, benefit plans appeals, etc.
  • Take part in major projects in the benefits area to redesign current programs, processes, and recommendations of new programs. Make revisions to programs currently being used to ensure program compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.


  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Business or related field required
  • Three years of retirement or benefits compliance experience required
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to employee health & welfare and retirement benefits, ERISA, COBRA, IRS Code, Dept. of Labor and PPACA required
  • Experience in Affordable Care Act reporting preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills preferred
  • Experience in mergers and acquisitions preferred
  • Master's degree or MBA preferred
