This position is for a lead pharmacist to have frontline supervision of UPMC Passavant's sterile products area, coordinate day to day operational function, and have extensive involvement in  regulatory compliance activities for the USP<797> and USP<800> standards within our cleanroom operations.  


This individual needs to have experience working in IV Room/Cleanroom setting and possess some technical and regulatory knowledge. We are also looking for someone that is comfortable taking ownership of this work area and has a lead by example mentality.

Purpose:

Supervise the direct patient care activities of the drug distribution system and inventory procurement and management of all pharmaceutical products. Assist the Director of Pharmacy / Pharmacy Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the department, including, but not limited to, unit dose and intravenous therapy distribution, quality assurance and drug usage evaluation. Perform staff pharmacist duties on a regular basis, as necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to all regulatory requirements, professional standards of practice, and hospital quality management policies and procedures in providing pharmaceutical care.
  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy in the management of the daily operations for the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Assist the Director of Pharmacy with scheduling of personnel to assure adequate staffing for all shifts and with all levels of personnel.
  • Communicate with physicians and nurses to insure prompt clarification of orders that are unclear, illegible, or incomplete, utilizing the STAR Intervention function.
  • Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions and medication errors accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Interpret and evaluate physician orders in order to prepare, calculate, and dispense appropriate medication dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient treatment in accordance with the Pennsylvania Pharmacy Practice Act, Federal Drug Laws, and other regulatory organizations.
  • Organize daily operational duties and assists in the supervision of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy aides, student interns and other ancillary personnel involved in providing pharmaceutical care.
  • Prepare and dispense intravenous admixture solutions, as required, using aseptic technique in an accepted sterile product preparation area.
  • Provide drug information and/or educational programs to healthcare professionals and pharmacy students.
  • Provide input for the Performance Management Review System for pharmacists and support staff.
  • Responsible for inventory management and procurement of all pharmaceuticals and supplies.
  • Sustain the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchange protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
  • Utilize all available technologies in the provision of pharmaceutical care (i.e., computer systems and databases, Acu-Dose, Robot-Rx, pneumatic tube system, etc).

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) or a graduate of a foreign pharmacy (fulfills all Stare and Federal licensure requirements). 
  • Three years experience in hospital pharmacy practice is strongly preferred, or other training and experience to ensure competency in a pharmacy management position. 
  • At least 3 years of Sterile Products Production/IV Room experience is preferred.
  • Show demonstrated competency in aspects of sterile products production, including involvement with sterile products workflow, supervision of IV compounding staff, administering media fill testing, and training others in aseptic technique and related competencies is preferred. 
  • Experience with USP<797> and USP<800> compliance, regulatory preparedness activities, and maintaining inspection readiness is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain, interpret, and adapt sterile products production to meet operational challenges, working in concert with frontline staff and Management to maintain and optimize workflow.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Pharmacist
