Description

Purpose:
The ophthalmic electrophysiologist will direct, operate and manage the laboratory, testing both pediatric and adult patients. The electrophysiologist will perform and interpret full-field and multi-focal electroretinograms (ERGs); pattern, flash, sweep and multi-focal visual evoked potentials (VEPs), electroculogram (EOGs). The electrophysiologist will be responsible for maintenance and calibration of equipment, as well as assessment of new equipment. Teaching staff, medical students, residents and fellows, as well as participating in clinical research endeavors of the department, poster presentations at national and international meetings and submitting case reports and articles for publication are essential.

Responsibilities:
  • Collects clinical data for audits and establishment of relevant protocols.
  • Manages and operates the Electrophysiology Laboratory assuring equipment is calibrated and working at maximum efficiency. Monitors the accuracy and quality of images, reports related work outputs. Assesses new equipment and provides administration with analyses to support purchase.
  • Participates in the clinical research endeavors of the department.
  • Performs all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates the values of UPMC-quality and safety; dignity and respect; caring and listening; responsibility and integrity; excellence and innovation.
  • Performs and interprets Electroculograms (EOGs) to assess the function of the outer retina and retinal pigment epithelium.
  • Performs and interprets Pattern, Flash, Sweep and Multi-focal Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) on pediatric and adult patients to assess the integrity and maturation of visual systems.
  • Performs and interprets full-field Electroretinograms (ERGs) on pediatric and adult patients in order to assess retinal responses assisting in the diagnosis of retinal diseases.
  • Performs and interprets multifocal ERGs on pediatric and adult patients to assess electrical responses from different regions of the retina.
  • Presents research papers and/or posters at professional meetings and publishes in professional journals .
  • Serves as Assistant Director of Ocular Electrophysiology Services on behalf of UPMC Eye Center, both adult and pediatric centers, maintaining the quality and efficiency of clinical and diagnostic outputs.
  • Teaches staff, medical students, residents and fellows on the use of ophthalmic electrophysiology in the diagnosis of retinal and macular pathologies as well as its use as a tool to assess visual acuity in infants and non-verbal adults.
  • Uses the electronic medical record to report interpretations. Consults with physicians regarding interpretation of test results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors required in neuroscience, visual science , biology, psychobiology or other related field of science;
  • Masters preferred in an appropriate area including visual sciences. Experience in Visual Evoked Potential and/or Electroretinography is preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
