The Psychologist II - Oncology provides diagnostic interviews  and outpatient counseling with parents/caregivers and patients, conducts appropriate screenings integrating historical and current clinical information and provides appropriate feedback and recommendations to families, community agencies/providers and hospital staff for intervention. May function as a sub-specialist within the unit and/or to provide specialty services for other programs. For inpatient services, coordinates with medical team to plan behavioral health treatment of patients.


  • Demonstrates highly developed knowledge and skill in the area of differential diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.
  • Performs psychiatric assessment with accurate diagnostic impressions.
  • Provides behavioral health services, using empirically validated treatments and interventions.  
  • Provides behavioral health services in using an acute and maintenance model. 
  • Schedules sufficient volume of patients so that direct service productivity standards are maintained within the department.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant literature and empirically validated treatments. 
  • Maintains knowledge of the literature relevant to the relevant patient population. 
  • Provides crisis sessions to support and assist patients experiencing acute distress and/or symptoms, as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with other service lines at UPMC and outside agencies assuring continuity of care with referral sources and other providers.
  • Participates in regular supervisory meetings with direct supervisor to review adherence to program standards.
  • Consults and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams regarding patient care and treatment planning.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain accurate and complete records and data collection, performed in a timely fashion.
  • Provides formal teaching and supervision for staff and trainees.


  • Doctorate degree in Psychology.
  • Three (3) years of experience in health and human services. 
  • Instructions specialist certificate desirable.
  • Excellent clinical interviewing and assessment/therapy skills to work with patients and families.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate findings of psychological testing to families and agencies.
  • Analytical ability to score and interpret psychological testing results and to analyze diagnostic data including medical conditions, developmental/psychological assessment data, and mental health conditions.
  • Excellent writing skills. Proficiency with standard office software applications.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Pennsylvania Psychologist license required
