UPMC is excited to be hiring a flexible, full-time Medical Lab Technician! This role would primarily work evening and night shift, with weekend and holiday responsibilities. 

In this role, you would provide accurate performance of routine and STAT laboratory testing. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes. Work in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists. Job duties are not age-specific in nature, except as required with direct patient contact (e.g., phlebotomy, throat culture collection).

  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.  
  • Enter accurately patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. 
  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. 
  • Inform supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.


  • Completion of Associate degree in a laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution, 
  • OR Certification from an accredited Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) program, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP preferred,  
  • OR Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.  
  • Possess good oral and written skills, must be able to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers as well as co-workers both on the telephone and directly. 
  • Become skilled in the use of Information System(s). 
  • Attend mandatory safety, compliance and other meetings required by laboratory and hospital guidelines. 
  • Attend in-services, lectures, and training classes, as required.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT(ASCP)) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred. 
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Older Adult Protective Services Act
