Nursing Assistants also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.

UPMC Jameson is hiring a Casual Nursing Assistant to support the 2 Southwest Respiratory Medical Surgical unit. 2 West is a 27 bed medical/surgical unit that provides care to adult and geriatric patients. While our main focus is respiratory patients, we also care for general surgery patients, thoracic, urologic, and OR patients. Our unit also has hospice and special needs rooms. Patient care staff in this department work on a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage. Availability for all shifts, including some weekends and holidays, is expected.

The Nursing Assistant is a valued step in the UPMC nursing support career ladder, with opportunities for upward advancement into lead and management roles. Many support staff may seek to use the knowledge and skill they gain in this position to launch a career in nursing, advanced practice, health care administration, therapy, or another related field.

  • Assist staff nurse or LPN in complicated treatment procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to management team, cleaning equipment as assigned, and preparing same for disinfection. In absence of Housekeeping, staff may
  • Assists patients with personal belongings on admission, transfer, and discharge. Completes clothing list as appropriate.
  • Assists with post-mortem care and transporting body to the morgue when necessary.
  • Assists with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient with proper body mechanics, applying and utilizing special equipment, as necessary, and ambulating the patient as directed.
  • Assures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establishes appropriate and effective communication strategies. Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.
  • Collects specimens and transports using proper technique.
  • Constructively receives feedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director. Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance. Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed. Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director.
  • Contributes information to the R.N. for revision of the nursing care plan.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team. Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence and impairment in the health professions. Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace. Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Following established procedure, obtains blood from blood bank as delegated by Registered Nurse.
  • Performs routine treatment procedures including enemas, filling ice bags, applying aqua pads, and surgical skin prep, as directed.
  • Performs the UPMC nursing core responsibilities for nursing assistants: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status. May apply, monitor and remove patient restraints per physician or hospital protocol. Provides diversional activities to reduce or prevent use of restraints. Documents in the medical record according to established procedures. Completes clerical functions as needed by department. Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions and understands policies and procedures for blood borne pathogen exposure. * Strictly adheres to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.* Responds within the scope of the nursing assistant role to emergent situations. * Provide companionship/supervision one in one with patients as required.
  • Prepares and transports patients to and from various areas as necessary.
  • Prepares patients for meals, distributes food trays, assists or feeds patients as necessary, and removes trays. Distributes drinking water and other nourishments to patients.
  • Provides direct patient care as directed by the RN including all activities of daily living such as but not limited to bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting and ambulating patients. Maintains an environment conducive to patient safety and recovery including, but not limited to, completing safety checks, keeping the department and patient rooms clean and organized, cleaning department specific equipment, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, keeping hallways clear of equipment and returning equipment. Acquires and distributes supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery including, but not limited to, performing messenger functions, ordering, charging/crediting supplies, setting up patient care equipment within the scope of the nursing assistant position and stocking patient rooms and unit supply areas. Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers and distributes patient mail.
  • Provides morning care (bed bath, as assigned, changing of all bed linens, dressing patient) and evening care (back rubs freshening bed linen, undressing patient) and other general care, as necessary.
  • Receives report and direction from nurse on assigned patients, makes rounds to assigned patients, anticipates patients� needs, and answers/responds to patient call lights.
  • Reports changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to the LPN and/or professional nurse. Uses nurse locator light consistently.
  • Suggests and supports changes within the department. Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges. Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, blood pressure, measuring and recording intake and output as directed.
  • Willing moves to other units depending upon patient and/or staffing needs.


High school diploma or equivalent. 
If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program or Nursing Student that has completed one Clinical Rotation. 
Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques. 
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. 
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred. 
Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
