Description

The Full-Time Research Technician will be part of a large, longitudinal research study, the Pittsburgh Girls Study. In this study, a sample of 2,450 girls from the city of Pittsburgh has been followed for 17 years to track developmental change and contexts of influence. In 2017, we began a new substudy (PGS-ECHO) to examine pregnancy and child health.

This individual will perform the duties of a laboratory technician for a study of participants from whom biospecimens will be collected in the home and brought to the laboratory for processing. They will log samples as they are brought to the lab, process blood samples (spin down, aliquot and freeze) for later analysis.

This position is grant funded.

Purpose:
Under supervision, responsible for accurately performing research projects according to established study design and procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
  • Assist in performing research protocol experimental procedures, under close supervision, including appropriate collection, recording, storage and analysis of data.
  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
  • Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and Hospital policies and standards.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
  • Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents and calibrates equipment for research projects.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of college training or one year of experience working within a biomedical research laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and process specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Act 33 Clearance
  • Act 73 Clearance
