Are you a Chaplain who would like to make a difference by providing pastoral care to patients and their families within a healthcare setting?
UPMC is looking for a Roman Catholic Priest to serve as a Chaplain. The ideal candidate will demonstrate responsibility and commitment towards pastoral care to their patient population. The Chaplain will be scheduled for various shifts including weekends and nights.


The Chaplain serves as a member of the health care team having an integral role in the hospital's mission to provide dignified, holistic, and sensitive care. Specifically, the Chaplain assists persons to integrate life's events through emotional support and a focus on spirituality.

  • Assist in distribution of Communion to patients according to denominational status.
  • Celebrate or facilitate the sacraments as appropriate.
  • Complies with the UPMC patient safety policy.
  • Demonstrates and reflects a commitment to the mission and core values of Mercy Hospital including reverence for each person, community, justice, commitment to those who are poor, stewardship, courage and integrity.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the objective of our Corporate Compliance Program and ethical business practices by fulfilling all responsibilities outlined in UPMC's Code of Conduct, including reporting compliance program violations. If any employees are supervised by this position, ensure that those employees follow UPMC's Code of Conduct, reward appropriate behavior and initiate disciplinary action in the event of compliance violations.
  • Engage in flexible work hours and share on-call responsibilities according to departmental guidelines and clerical status.
  • Keep records, document, and submit reports as required.
  • Participate in continuing education, departmental staff meetings, hospital committees and patient conferences to enhance the continuity of care.
  • Participate in presiding and preaching at Eucharistic liturgies and/or ecumenical worship services, as appropriate.
  • Performs essential job functions as outlined below. May perform additional essential and/or non-essential job functions as assigned and as described in the employee's performance evaluation tool.
  • Provide spiritual support to patients and/or families in crisis as well as families of critical or deceased patients.
  • Regularly visit all patients in assigned areas according to departmental guidelines while prioritizing time for those greatest need.


  • Bachelors degree required. Masters preferred. 
  • Area of Education: Theological related area ie., Pastoral Ministry, Religious Education, Divinity.  
  • Four or more units of CPE or equivalent for certification. 
  • Graduate studies in pastoral theology and/or pastoral counseling preferred. 
  • One year of hospital ministry experience preferred.  
  • Ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of specific needs of the patient served. 
  • Possesses a knowledge of the human growth and development of patients served.  
  • Understands the range of treatment needed by the patients served. 
  • Ability to move freely throughout the institution in order to visit patients and respond to on-call requests in a timely manner. 
  • Good communication skills with evidence of ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Respect and sensitivity for varied religious preferences.  
  • Ability to integrate theology of healthcare ministry with spiritual practice. 
  • Evidence of updating skills, competencies, and post Vatican II theology through continuing education.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
