UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport seek a full-time Director of Patient Safety to support our quality and patient safety initiatives and regulatory compliance. The position will have oversight of patient safety at our hospitals located in Monroeville and McKeesport, respectively.

The Director of Patient Safety has the responsibility, accountability and direction for the patient safety programs, including the implementation of the Patient Safety Plan, and provides the leadership in supporting and developing a culture of safety and in identifying opportunities and initiatives to enhance patient safety. As Director, you will develop operational plans that build upon the present patient safety programs. You will serve as an integral component in implementing this visionary approach, proactively addressing patient safety issues by utilizing data, information from our Patient Safety Committee, and other reporting metrics to analyze issues. Through collaboration and partnerships, you will develop programs and services that produce measurable improvements in processes and practices that affect patient safety. Ultimately, this should result in a decrease of incidents, costs and severity levels of hospital incidents.

The Director of Patient Safety is a highly visible role, reporting directly to the Director of Quality, Safety, and Experience, and a dot-line to the Chief Quality Officer for the UPMC system.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the development of systems that enable efficiency and successful Quality Improvement and valued based performance programs.
  • Collaborate with and serve as a liaison to the UPMC Patient Safety Officers and Hospital Triads to implement system-wide patient safety measures.
  • Coordinate communications with patients and families about significant aspects of patient care, including the disclosure of Serious Events in accordance with the Hospital/system policy, Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (MCARE) Act, and Joint Commission standards
  • Coordinate the Hospital Triad to keep them informed of patient safety priorities, initiatives and incidents.
  • Coordinates Employee Health processes to optimize the safety of our staff and patients.
  • Developing an effective collaborative relationship is essential to maintaining patient safety as a high priority.
  • Develops and administers departmental/service policies, procedures, and appropriate standards of care.
  • Establishing and maintaining a customer service-oriented philosophy for the Patient Safety department/staff and their dealings with all customers.
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships within UPMC and with external agencies, purchasers, and stakeholders related to patient safety.
  • Initiate and oversee the development of a comprehensive patient safety improvement program inclusive of the analysis and trending of data related to hospital initiatives.
  • Overseeing the Hospital's system for internal reporting of Reportable Patient Events and Infrastructure failures
  • Proactively communicating with and educating leadership and staff regarding patient safety initiatives and activities.
  • Providing leadership in patient safety committees and be responsible for communicating vertically and horizontally to all constituents
  • Providing the needed direction to ensure that clinical services are provided in accordance with safety standards established by federal and state regulatory agencies and the Joint Commission accreditation standards, including the National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Remaining fully informed of national and local patient safety mandates.
  • Reviewing the current programs and developing clear expectations and recommending a process for analyzing trends, identifying root causes, and ultimately developing solutions to issues identified during the rounding process.
  • Serve as the corporate risk management leader and liaison for all activities and assure open communication
  • Serving on UPMC committees, especially ad-hoc committees established to improve patient safety.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree required.
  • Undergraduate degree must be in a healthcare related field.
  • Candidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of healthcare operations
  • Minimum 5 years of healthcare management experience required.
  • Additional training/experience in patient safety is preferred.
  • A clinical background is helpful, but not required to be successful in the role. 
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to provide effective collaboration and consultation.
  • Ability to organize and define problems, develop strategies, and carry out action plans.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Capable of exercising sound judgment and making independent decisions 
  • Ability to adapt to a complex organizational/system environment
  • Ability to analyze data and formulate conclusions.
  • Proficient use of computers; requires solid working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, Power Point).
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to create verbal and written reports.
