Do you have a passion for caring for patients who have poison-related health care questions? UPMC Presbyterian is currently hiring a Poison Specialty nurse to join the Poison center department. If this sounds like something that would interest you, please find the responsibilities below:

Responds to and answers poison information questions for health care providers and proxy treatment of children, adults and animals suffering poisonous and potentially poisonous substances. Interacts with health care professionals, patients, families, government officials (local, regional, state and federal), and business and industry clients.

  • Document activities through required documentation systems, departmental reports and quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Function effectively in emergency and often life-threatening situations.
  • Interact with poisoned victims or other concerned individuals during periods of acute duress, calm the caller and elicit accurate information concerning the emergent situation.
  • Provide and documents recommendations that positively affect patient outcome.
  • Provide evidence-based general and patient-specific poison information in a continuous manner taking into account the age and clinical condition of each patient.
  • Receive telephone calls from or concerning poisoned persons. Request and record pertinent data, analyzes toxicity problems, determines type and severity of exposure.
  • Serve as a resource to and interact routinely with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, business and industry clients, other resource agencies, and other poison and drug information personnel.
  • Support poison center-related research. Maintain expertise in area(s) of practice through continual learning experience.
  • When answering poison information questions, recommends corrective measures, and initiates treatment actions as needed. Refer poisoned victims to health care facilities when appropriate.


  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse 
  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience required.  
  • ED, ICU, OR or proven exposure to toxicology events required 
  • Previous poison center experienced preferred 
  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CSPI certification from the AAPCC preferred must obtain within 2 years of starting the role.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Registered Nurse

Salary Range: $22.60 to $39.11
