UPMC Chautauqua at WCA is seeking a full-time Director of Rehabilitation Services for our location in Jamestown, New York.

As Director of Rehabilitation Services, you will have strategic oversight for inpatient medical rehabilitation units, as well as inpatient/outpatient physical and occupational therapy, recreational therapy, and speech pathology as well as audiology programs.

You will have responsibility for the day to day organization and administration of the patient care center, contractual services, or management services as may be developed by the hospital. Additionally, you will maintain strong working relationships with UPMC's Centers for Rehab Services division.

A highly visible role, this position will report directly to the Vice President of Operations for the hospital and will also work closely with the hospital President.

  • Actively participates in human resources management for the area of responsibility, including but not limited to the following areas: selection/placement (interviewing/hiring); orientation of all facility staff, performance management (evaluation/competency assessment/improvement plans), and employee relations (including disciplinary action and conflict resolution). Consults with human resources representative and/or POD director when dealing with these matters to ensure compliance on internal (policies/practices) and external (legal and regulatory) matters. Conduct continuing education, competency assessments, performance evaluations, counsels employees and administers disciplinary actions as required.
  • Appropriately requests and actively reports objective feedback to the Regional Director regarding department performance and emergency situations. Actively supports and implements the organization directives of the senior management team.
  • Assesses the impact of such changes on the hospital's current and future health care environment, and takes appropriate measure to assure compliance.
  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings.
  • Completes performance evaluations of direct reports as requested in a thorough and timely manner. Assists the Regional director in the disciplinary process as appropriate. Delegates performance reviews to Senior Staff appropriately.
  • Formulates and institutes a marketing and business development plan for the facility. This is done in consultation with the Regional or Program Director, the Director of Marketing and Business Development and/or the Corporate Management Team and includes but is not limited to participation in community relations activities (health fairs, school districts, senior/community centers, churches, professional groups). Participate in the development of short and long-range planning objectives and strategic initiatives, and works with key stakeholders to ensure organizational success. Serve as a project manager/facilitator for strategic initiatives and programs, as may be undertaken to enable the organization to meet defined goals and objectives.
  • Maintain ongoing knowledge of regulatory changes, including but no limited to JCAHO, PA Department of Health, MQSA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains professional license/registration through steady pursuit and participation in appropriate continuing education and professional development opportunities to satisfy requirements for licensure/registration renewal.
  • Modifies or adjusts plan of care based on patient's response to treatment and/or changes in patient's status. Works PTAs and COTAs to adjust patient programs as patient status changes. Maintains written documentation for all PT, OT and/or SLP services rendered including documentation of initial assessment, follow-up visits, and discharge summary consistent with department standards. Co-signs physical therapist assistant documentation biweekly.
  • Oversee implementation of budget process for area of responsibility and monitors compliance with budgetary objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of program and activities, to achieve improvement in organizational performance related to clinical, service, and financial outcomes.
  • Oversees program development. This may include; development and implementation of patient care teams and specific orientation and/or reference manuals for their respective facility. Objectively identifies and analyzes the source of problems, develops innovative approaches to problem solving and implements appropriate change.
  • Oversees the daily operations of patient care services in their respective facility. This may include; addressing daily staffing needs, developing staffing schedules, review and approval of time off requests, and participating in the interviewing/selection process for their respective facility.
  • Performs PT, OT and/or SLP assessments, reassessment and treatment and supervises PT and/or OT assistants in the treatment of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients referred by a physician to the clinic. Develops plan of care including goals and treatment plan in accordance with physician referral, nature of injury/illness and results of PT, OT and/or SLP assessment.
  • Rotates through selected treatment areas when necessary to facilitate organizational needs.
  • Serves as Assistant Regional Director or acting Regional Director or program coordinator in the absence of the incumbent. Act as the administrative representative on behalf of UPMC CRS and Respective Hospital on both internal and external committees, affiliated boards, and civic organizations.
  • Work with respective department heads and/or key department personnel to achieve compliance with hospital policies and procedures, consistent with the mission, vision, and strategic initiatives of the hospital, making appropriate recommendations to Executive Leadership as appropriate.


  • Graduate of an accredited program within respective discipline (Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy)
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience in either discipline required. 
  • Previous clinical supervisory/management experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in a specialty area a plus, but not required.
  • Customer service experience and ability preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist
