UPMC Passavant is hiring a part-time Endoscopy Technician to support the GI Lab at our McCandless location. This position will work weekdays, primarily daylight shift, with some assigned late shifts and call requirements. 


The Endoscopy Technician will assist the physician and nursing staff by performing specific adolescent/adult/geriatric patient care. They will also manage the care and maintenance of all endoscopic equipment and instruments used in the G.I. Laboratory as well as provide backup to the Equipment Reprocessor when staffing levels and/or volume necessitates. The Endoscopy Technician will perform secretarial duties as needed and relieve nursing personnel of a variety of duties including delivery of specimens to appropriate lab, obtain supplies and perform messenger duties and miscellaneous errands as requested.


  • Know and comply with fire, safety and emergency plans.
  • Accurately maintain all required logs [i.e. endoscope/scope reprocessor logs,, gluteraldehyde changes, quality control checks for appropriate concentration of gluteraldehyde, water filter changes, daily maintenance of ultrasonic cleaner and reprocessor exposure log, refrigerator temperature, eyewash station log and CLO incubator log (PUH campus only) etc.].
  • Actively participate in the GI Labs staff meetings.
  • Assist in the identification of safety hazards and reports appropriately.
  • Assist physicians with therapeutic procedures as per procedure guidelines under the direction of the professional nurse and/or physician.
  • Assume assigned duties in emergency situations.
  • Assume responsibility for own development.
  • Assure equipment is functioning properly before use.
  • Attend mandatory in-service programs.
  • Attend/read relevant departmental in-service programs.
  • Begin work at scheduled start time.
  • Can organize and prioritize down time to best meet unit needs.
  • Care for and maintain all endoscopic equipment utilized in the G.I. Laboratory.
  • Clean procedure rooms/travel carts after each case per proper guidelines.
  • Comply with all established policies/procedures of the GI Lab and the hospital.
  • Consistently offer assistance to coworkers.
  • Contribute to an efficient work and team environment.
  • Contribute to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Correctly set up procedure room with appropriate endoscope/equipment and instruments.
  • Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot problems or mechanical failure of equipment and notifies Clinical Coordinator or Equipment Coordinator.
  • Demonstrate understanding of unit staffing needs by being flexible and helpful.
  • Distribute clean linen to appropriate areas and keeps covered at all times.
  • Keep hallways free of equipment.
  • Leak tests and carefully inspect all equipment prior to disinfecting/sterilization.
  • Maintain own body safety by complying with established policies/procedures.
  • Maintain supply inventory and re-orders supplies when necessary. Rotate dated supplies and restocks procedure rooms.
  • Notify Clinical Coordinator or Equipment Coordinator of any damage to equipment
  • Obtain specimens, properly label, log specimens appropriately and delivers specimens to appropriate area as necessary.
  • Participate in self review as requested by department manager.
  • Participate in unit based Performance Improvement
  • Perform care activities for patient safety as per procedure guidelines under the direction of the professional nurse.
  • Personal phone calls are kept to a minimum.
  • Properly clean and disinfect or sterilize equipment/instruments according to policy.
  • Provide backup to Equipment Reprocessors to maintain fiberoptic endoscopic instruments and accessory equipment utilized in the GI Laboratory when staffing levels and/or volume indicates.
  • Return unused supplies or reusable equipment to proper storage place
  • Show initiative and responsibility. Act as a positive role model.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Take appropriate time for lunch and breaks per departmental guidelines.
  • Transport GI travel carts as necessary.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • When necessary, transport patients to and from the GI lab in a safe manner.
  • Work cooperatively and promotes effective communication. Receptive to and encourage feedback.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous employment or training as an Endoscopy Technician, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or other medical specialty such as Central Service Technician.
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored.
  • No contact with medications is allowed.

  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

    • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
    • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
