Join the Advanced Patient Care Technician (APCT) Rehabilitation Cohort!

This cohort specializes in comprehensive care management in four highly specialized areas of patient rehabilitation. You will have the opportunity to rotate at UPMC Mercy’s Rehabilitation Institute on their Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, and General Rehabilitation Units. As part of the cohort you will be afforded the opportunity to gain valuable hands on patient care skills, develop comprehensive care plans, have access to state of the art technology in one of the nations leading rehabilitation programs on a customized educational platform.

The 9 week cohort will include orientation and a 2 week rotation on each of the four Rehabilitation Units. After successful completion on the cohort you are able to stay in the Advanced Patient Care Technician position with casual flexible scheduling offered.

Our spinal cord program is one of only 14 in the United States designated as a spinal cord injury model system by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research; because we are a nationally designated center of excellence in spinal cord care, we are often involved in research studies and as a test site for the latest treatments. UPMC Mercy is also a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint Commission.
Advanced Patient Care Technicians are essential partners in the mission, enhancing the patient experience at UPMC with positivity and integrity. Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. 


• Performs basic clinical skills such as taking blood pressures, pulses, and respirations; weighing patients; and testing blood sugars by finger stick.
• Walks patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway. Helps patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.
• Transports patients (by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts) to and from tests and other units.
• Re-positions patients in bed, assists patients in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).
• Bathes/showers patients, cleans soiled patients and beds, empties urine collection bags and measures urine, empties and measures fluid from drains.
• Prepares patients for meals, feeds patients, fills water pitchers, restocks supplies, and prepares rooms for new admissions.
• Assists with post-life physical care.
• Some units may require clerical and telephone work.
• Complete a comprehensive skill care plan with each unit rotation.
• Performs other duties as assigned.



• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current enrollment in a RN program strongly preferred.
• Nursing students beginning final year (last 2 semesters) of nursing program strongly preferred.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
