Under general direction, plan, program and design interior signage, exterior signage, and other sign and display materials for various hospitals and other health system. Manage vendor production of all materials. Scope is primarily programming and layout of interior signage according to sign system standards catalogs, with occasional display or exterior signage programming, and occasional custom design.

  • Authorize vendor payment, organize and file paperwork, artwork, digital files, photographs and samples accordingly.
  • Conduct site surveys at sign sites and gather all pertinent project information.  
  • Conduct signage planning and prepare sign lists, message schedules, and site plans as needed.  
  • Develop and maintain production schedules and project budgets.
  • Inspect all completed signage on site in a timely fashion; create, distribute and manage completion of punch lists and change orders as needed.
  • Monitor project progress to keep all projects on schedule while maintaining the budget and appropriate level of quality.  
  • Reprioritize and redistribute projects as needed.
  • Plan, program, layout and design signs, including interior, exterior, standard and custom signage, with proper attention to function, concept and visual appearance.  
  • Maintain UPMC brand identity, graphic and signage standards on all UPMC materials.  
  • Meet with signage and facilities project managers, clients/end users, architects, production personnel, and other staff and vendors to determine project goals, scope and specifications.
  • Prepare production artwork and fabrication/installation specifications. 
  • Create vendor bid lists and purchase requisitions, and coordinate the solicitation of vendor bids in accordance with established purchasing policies.
  • Promote quality, timeliness, and cost efficiency in the procurement of services and products. 
  • Schedule and manage signage installations; oversee installers as necessary.
  • Manage all aspects of vendor production, including releasing sign artwork and specifications, reviewing vendor shop drawing/technical engineering blueprints/specifications for accuracy, troubleshooting difficulties as they arise, and supervising vendor shop checks to ensure that high quality production is achieved at all times.


  • Bachelors degree in Signage Technology/Management/Production, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Environmental Design, Communications, Interior Design, Architecture, Engineering, or related field required AND a minimum of three years of professional experience in related field required OR  Associates degree with five years of professional experience may be substituted.  
  • Significant knowledge and experience in the signage design and/or production industry preferred.  
  • Interior signage programming experience, especially in health care and/or institutional environments, preferred.  
  • Strong project, program and personnel management experience required.
  • Strong organizational abilities required.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.  
  • Computer experience required. 
  • Experience in Microsoft Office products (primarily Excel and Word) Filemaker, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop preferred.  
  • Three-dimensional visualization ability and ability to read blueprints and other architectural documents required.  
  • Extensive knowledge of signage specifications, manufacturing, and installation required. 
  • Must have the ability to travel to all UPMC facilities.
