Under the general supervision of the Medical and Administrative Directors of Pulmonary Services the Pulmonary Function Technologist will perform general diagnostic testing and instruct patients in the pulmonary evaluation process.

We will consider all levels of the Pulmonary Technologist Career path. The final title and pay will be determined by education, experience, and certification.


  • Adheres to department policies, performance and reporting of procedures, billing and overtime.
  • Assists in pulmonary rehab as requested and assists in providing emergency medical care if needed.
  • Maintains Pulmonary Function equipment, to include calibration, & simple repairs.
  • Performs a complete range of pulmonary diagnostic tests including spirometery, lung volumes and diffusion capacity. Administers respiratory care medications as they relate to performance of pulmonary function testing as delineated in policies /protocols.
  • Performs comprehensive bronchoprovocation challenge testing procedures.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities according to the corporate philosophy and basis of service excellence of the UPMC Health System.
  • Performs exercise desaturation; six-minute walk studies and home oxygen evaluation procedures, including arterial blood gas punctures and hemoglobin samples.


  • High school graduate or two years of college with a science and math background or degree in a related field.
  • Previous experience in healthcare setting a plus. Must be able to interact with unstable patients.
  • Prefer pulmonary and respiratory experience.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

    Associates Degree in Science required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
