UPMC Health Plan is interested in hiring an experienced Data Architect to work closely with our software and application development teams to recommend database structures based on the data storage and retrieval needs within each department. The candidate in this role should be analytically minded, an excellent problem-solver, and able to work either independently or as part of a team. Under the direction of management, the Data Architect will champion the use of the overall Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Also, he/she will lead coordination and orchestration of the overall database modeling and design which will deliver significant impact. The focus of this position will be to have a full mastery and in-depth understanding of the database structure principles and mentor less experienced team members. Additionally, the Data Architect is responsible for defining technical requirements and the overall data architecture for specific solutions and aligned to our Data Warehousing strategy


  • Application Development Cycle – Define how to use different SDLC. Responsible for establishing processes around SDLCS.
  • Application Data Architecture – Architecting and implementing the conceptual, logical and physical data models to support the enterprise information strategies of the UPMC, the business intelligence agenda as well as our self-service analytics approach. Work directly with project teams and solution owners to ensure that new and existing solutions adhere to the architecture standards and that they have controls in place to maintain a high level of data quality. Decompose, prioritize and provide workable solutions to solve complex business problems using data and analytics.
  • Security – Define and establish security protocol. Ensure that processes/protocols are followed by junior level staff. Help maintain the integrity and security of the company databases and data assets.
  • Troubleshooting – Responsible for issue prevent by proactively identifying resolutions for issues that may arise. Coordinates, delegates, and mentors less experienced staff with issue resolution. Analyze database implementation methods to make sure they are in line with company policies and any external regulations that may apply
  • Quality – Responsible for the integrity and quality of data and information stored and flowing between business applications, the enterprise data warehouse, data marts and business intelligence applications. Provide insight into the changing database storage and utilization requirements for the company and offer suggestions for solutions
  • Design –Exhibits awareness of user experience standards. Develop database design and architecture documentation for the management and executive teams
  • Integration – Responsible for designing systems of integrated systems and modules.
  • Documentation – Create detail-oriented documentation that outlines new and moderately complex processes. Responsible for quality and validity of documentation. 
  • Communication - Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects.
  • Interactions with Others - Responsible to ensure that the business intelligence team and technology services team is managing and maintaining the data catalog, definitions, standards, governance and regulations surrounding data in the environment. Successfully completes projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with team and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts. Shows the ability to adjust and be flexible to change by adapting approach when necessary. Mentors less experienced staff.
  • Self Development - Responsible for continuous self-study, training's, partnering with management, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from management for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Standard Responsibilities - Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements
  • Typically has 10+ years of related work experience.
  • Proven work experience as a Data Architect, Data Scientist, Data Analyst or similar role preferable in health care and insurance services.
  • Proven ability to work in distributed database and systems Experience gathering and analyzing system requirements
  • Agile and scrum methodologies is a must to know for this job.
  • Experience with enterprise data management technologies including data mining and segmentation techniques, data warehouses, ETL tools, SQL, Oracle, and master data management solutions
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI and R)loping on cross-functional systems.
  • Deep knowledge of developing complete systems.Mastery of the SDLC.
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations. 
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated ability to lead in a team based environment.
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Propose database solutions through potential system designs
  • Strong organizational skills – must be able to design, lead and manage teams composed of stakeholders across diverse teams/domains
  • Preferred experience with Microsoft Azure BI and Analytics Stack including Azure SQL and related technologies
  • Practical experience in participating and running data management programs
  • Experience in big data and NoSQL is a plus

Salary Range: $49.98 to $81.42
