UPMC Susquehanna has a current Full-time opening for an Ophthalmic Technician. This is a 40-hour per week position located on the campus of Divine Providence Hospital. If you are proficient in history taking and basic patient work-ups, ancillary study testing (ex. optic nerve imaging, optical biometry, and visual field testing); Goldmann applanation tonometry, manifest refraction, as well as setting up and assisting in minor procedures we want to hear from you!

Assists the Ophthalmologists in diagnosing eye diseases. Performs diagnostic testing, maintains equipment and explains concepts to patients.



  • Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
  • Checks Afferent Pupillary Defect (APD) and Intraocular Pressure (IOP).
  • Commit to high quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors or adverse events. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety measures are not circumvented. Encourage patient and family involvement in processes involving patient safety. Understand that patient safety is everyone's responsibility. Assume responsibility for personal education and performance related to patient safety; report unsafe conditions or events immediately; speak up in a non confrontational and educational manner when seeing a safety breech; develop or participate in a project or action plan to reduce risk or mitigate harm for patients, as appropriate.
  • Completes patient chart documentation.
  • Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
  • Maintains an efficient patient flow.
  • Maintains office medical inventory and maintains equipment.
  • Measures glasses.
  • Performs diagnostic tests, assists in minor procedures, , explains concepts to patients and counsels patients for surgery.
  • Performs telephone duties including patient calls regarding medical problems and follow-up with proper treatment as directed by physician.
  • Schedules patient appointments, diagnostic tests and referrals to other physicians and hospitals.


High School Diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited program for Ophthalmic Technicians required. One year of experience working in an Ophthalmology practice.


Non Certified Technicians with two years of experience in a related Ophthalmology or Optometric setting  will also be considered.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Ophthalmology Technician Certification required. 

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
