UPMC is looking for security/law enforcement professionals to help support our mission of Quality & Safety for patients, visitors, and fellow employees.  The Safety and Security Department at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is currently hiring a Police Officer to fill various shifts.

The Police Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff and all UPMC owned and adjacent properties; enforcing UPMC rules and regulations to both employees and the public; patrolling UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds and associated areas to prevent, investigate, and document arson, theft and vandalism and any other criminal activity; monitoring security, fire, and environmental alarms. Assists in follow-up as necessary; and responding to and resolving problems, disputes and unusual circumstances as necessary. They will also provide customer service to patients, families, visitors and staff to maintain a safe and secure environment.

  • Assist with traffic control as necessary.
  • Check permission slips to remove discarded material from UPMC property.
  • Completion of reports and incident documentation as necessary.
  • Control evidence, valuables, lost/found as necessary.
  • Handle disruptive visitors, patients and staff by verbal communication, physical intervention and/or arrests as necessary.
  • Inspect incoming/outgoing parcels as necessary to prevent theft of hospital property.
  • Maintain security and safety of UPMC buildings, persons, property and assets. Serve as a member of the fire response team and responds to various security-related alarms.
  • Operate UPMC vehicles in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code and maintain any issued equipment.
  • Prepare and complete all mandatory training programs as per departmental guidelines.
  • Provide customer service to patients, families, visitors and staff and maintains a safe and secure environment through protection and enforcement of local laws, UPMC policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance, and disasters. Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances reported by UPMC staff, visitors, physicians and patients.
  • Respond to helipad for flight operations. Maintains fire safety watch and assists with patient equipment loading, unloading and escort.
  • Testify in legal proceeding as required.


  • High school.
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania criminal procedure and rules of evidence.
  • Excellent customer service skills necessary to handle all levels of Hospital personnel and visitors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to defuse and handle distraught or hostile person(s) in a professional manner.
  • Technical ability necessary to operate video equipment, alarm systems, computers, monitors, printers, weapons and communications equipment.
  • 2 years of law enforcement experience OR 5 years of security experience required.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 235 with Firearms or Act 235 without Firearms
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 501 within 90 days
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Driver's License
  • UPMC Physical Fitness Standard
  • PA Act 120 (Municipal Police Officer Training Act) preferred
