The Magee Obstetric Medical and Infant Database (MOMI) is an electronic database comprised of all deliveries at Magee-Womens Hospital, Pittsburgh PA. MOMI contains 300 variables for over 200,000 deliveries from 1995 to the present. The current list of variables comes from admitting services, ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, medical record data abstraction, the Pennsylvania state electronic birth record, and the Magee NICU database.

We are recruiting for a Research Database Manager to oversee this database, facilitate linkage to other clinical data repositories, maintain all regulatory approvals for data use, work with a small team to fulfill investigator research requests, develop quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and completeness of data, and implement a plan for expansion of MOMI to other UPMC delivery hospitals.

This position is grant funded.


  • Assist senior investigator(s) in the design and plan of protocols and experiments for research projects.
  • Coordinate all research activities, including data collection, data input, evaluation and analysis for a segment of a research project.
  • Develop and implement solutions to solve study protocol problems.
  • Develop and maintain an organizational plan for the laboratory.
  • Develop curriculum materials for an educational session(s).
  • Ensure that the laboratory meets applicable department, hospital and regulatory safety and fire requirements.
  • Ensure the operational efficiency and accuracy of laboratory equipment; arranges for the repair of equipment.
  • Has responsibility for interviewing, orientation, scheduling, work assignment and occasional input as needed from faculty supervisor.
  • Implement, maintain, document and assist in the development of an effective quality assurance/quality control program; meets reporting schedules and standards.
  • Individual's actions are not limited to a single work area and have a significant effect on the outcome of the research.
  • Organize and interpret data and reports the results to principal investigator, study nurses and study monitors.
  • Participate in planning and setting goals for the maintenance and development of activities and resources appropriate for the requirements of the laboratory.
  • Participate in the preparation of papers for publication and presentation at meetings. Solicit information from principal investigator and study nurses.
  • Perform complex scientific data reductions requiring the use of independent judgment.
  • Perform laboratory procedures and tests. Analyze and interprets the results.
  • Prepare, monitor and manage annual capital, labor and operating laboratory budgets.
  • Program complex scientific and mathematical problems for solutions on a computer.
  • Required to have an understanding of practices and procedures.
  • Resolves unique problems by collecting and interpreting information.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Significant interaction outside of own work area and the MWRI.
  • Solutions may include modifying procedures and methods to address new conditions. Occasionally receives advice and input as needed from faculty supervisor.
  • Supervise library and computer searches for research data.
  • The results of actions have a significant impact on a faculty investigator's research operation, with negative actions having a devastating impact on a faculty investigator's research operation.
  • Write, update and maintain the laboratory policy and procedure manual according to department and hospital standards.


  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Basic Science.
  • Ten (10) years of experience if you have a Bachelor's degree
  • Eight (8) years of experience is you have a Master's degree
  • Two (2) years of experience if you have a Doctorate degree
  • Experience must be of a post-graduate technical experience in a research environment.
  • Two - three (2-3) years in a supervisory capacity with a staff of at least 2 and responsibility over at least 3 extramural research studies.
  • Previous experience as a Research Assistant, Research Associate and/or Laboratory Supervisor in a research environment.
  • Proficient management and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle, process and evaluate specimens for testing.
  • Computer science, programming, project management preferred.
