Purpose:
The UPMC Revenue Cycle team is looking for a new Coding Supervisor! THis role will provide the coordination and supervision of daily operations of the Coding Department within the Patient Business Services. The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the review and monitoring of all coding and reimbursement staff in their daily activities. This role will require direct interaction with Central Business Office personnel, physicians, and personnel from other practice plans and third party payors.

Responsibilities:
  • Analyze work flow to maximize automation and follow up procedures.
  • Assist management in the development and implementation of policies and procedure for Coding and Reimbursement.
  • Assist management in the formation of quarterly and yearly goals.
  • Be familiar with the specific coding/reimbursements requirements for each specialty.
  • Engage in open communication with CBO Education and Training personnel regarding information system, third party payor, and regulatory updates and/or enhancements and participate in the training of staff.
  • Ensure all coding and appeals are completed in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Investigate staff issues and provide feedback as appropriate to management and staff members.
  • Monitor all systems activity for the Coding department.
  • Monitor and ensure proper maintenance of logs and tracking systems as required by payors and UPMC policies.
  • Monitor the appeal process for identification of consistent errors and follow up with the UPMC and/or non-UPMC management for improvement in quality and performance.
  • Participate in the recruitment and evaluation of coding department staff members under direct supervision.
  • Perform Reimbursement Specialist duties for specifically selected accounts.
  • Perform audits of staff work to monitor performance, quality and adherence to accepted coding practices.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in a fashion which coincides with the service management philosophy of the UPMC including the demonstration of the basics of service excellence towards patients, visitors, staff, peers, physicians and other departments within the medical center.
  • Provide back up coverage to support daily processes performed during staff vacations, absences, etc.
  • Supervise staff to ensure maximum productivity and accuracy of all coding and appeals conducted in the CBO.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate of equivalent required. 
  • Bachelors degree preferred.  
  • Three years progressively responsible experience, including previous physician coding experience required. 
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred. 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. 
  • Knowledge of all types of procedural and diagnosis coding, as well as, reimbursement and appeal practices. 
  • Ability establish priorities, effectively problem solve, and use good judgment and decision making day-to-day operations. 
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.  
  • Requires prior working experience with personal computers and other office equipment. ART, CCS, or CPC certification is also desired.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ART, CCS, or CPC certification preferred.
