Description

UPMC Presbyterian is excited to be hiring a Histotechnician/Histotechnologist to help support the dermatology department located at the Falk Medical Building. This role will be scheduled varying daylight shifts.

This role includes processing tissue particularly for Mohs procedures as well as various clinical duties requiring significant patient contact.


You will also perform the fixation, embedding, microtomy, slide mounting and staining to include H&E staining, special stains, enzyme histochemical stains and immunohistochemical stains, maintain equipment and instruments used in pathology, and assists with gross pathology.

Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Enter pertinent histology laboratory data into the computerized data collection program.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintain instruments following quality control, daily maintenance protocols and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; use materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of special stains in addition to the routine hematoxylin and eosin stains; prepare specimens for special procedures, such as for muscle and nerve histochemistry.
  • Perform immunohistochemical staining procedures on routine and processed and frozen tissue. 
  • Prepare both paraffin embedded tissues and frozen tissues on routine surgical and consult specimens. 
  • Perform microtomy on paraffin embedded tissue and frozen tissues in slide preparation for immunohistochemical procedures.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and stains as needed according to specific instructions and labels appropriately.
  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for cutting, mounting and staining, etc., for review by the staff pathologist. 
  • Perform limited gross pathology. 
  • Prepare a quality laboratory product in a professional manner consistent with the System's aim of quality service to our patients in accordance with all CAP and JCAHO guidelines.
  • Utilize the Pathology Information System efficiently to generate work lists and labels and to improve the workflow.
  • Rooming patients, and obtaining vital signs.
  • Providing wound care, and simple dressing changes. 

Qualifications

Histotechnician
  • High school diploma. 
  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam; successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years or an Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry. 
  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.
Senior Histotechnician
  • High school diploma. 
  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam; successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years or an Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry. 
  • 3 years of clinical laboratory experience post-training is required.
Histotechnologist 
  • Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years, or a B.S.degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years. Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist. 
  • 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Histology Technician (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
