This position in the Division of Infectious Diseases, HIV/AIDS Program is a Peer Advocate for the Pittsburgh AIDS Center for Treatment (PACT) Clinic. The position will develop and expand consumer/patient involvement in programming at the outpatient HIV/AIDS clinic, including assuming leadership in the development and management of the consumer advisory board.


The candidate must have the ability to provide non-judgmental support to diverse group of people living with HIV/AIDS. Good listening skills and ability to work with the care team to help insure patients' active involvement in their medical care.


This position is funded through the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Ryan White CARE Act Pact C and Part D grant.


  • Assist new patients with establishing care at PACT and adjusting to their illness. Candidate will meet with all new patients and provide initial orientation to clinic services. Convey healthy adjustment to HIV diagnosis through ability to share personal experiences. Ability to maintain open and non-judgmental support.
  • Assist patients with a variety of supportive services to help them with adherence to treatment, self-management skills and understanding health care needs. Maintain contact with established patients through routine outreach in waiting room, in exam room while waiting for physician, and by phone contact with patients identified as needing support. Refer patients to available clinic services as needed including mental health services, case management and social services, pharmacy and adherence support. Facilitate monthly men's support group when current volunteer is unable to do so.
  • Expand patient/consumer involvement in programming. Chair Peer Advisory Board, work with administrator to initiate advisory board, mission, and member functions. Recruit patients interested in volunteer and advisory roles in outpatient program. Assist senior social worker in development of focus groups.
  • Provide leadership in the regional by being available for public speaking engagements related to living with HIV. Be available for physician referrals for non-PACT patients hospitalized at UPMC Presby/Shadyside.

  • High school or GED required.
  • College degree with experience in program development, patient education, and/or HIV/AIDS services preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
