UPMC St. Margaret is excited to be hiring a casual Staff Lab Tech Assistant. This person will work every third Saturday 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with possibility of an extra days and vacation coverage if available! 

Ideal candidate will have knowledge of blood tests and experience in phlebotomy, specimen processing, or medical assisting. 

In this role, you will enter patient demographics and insurance into hospital information system; enter lab orders into lab information system; process samples from hospital and outreach clients following all hospital and federal safety regulations; respond to phone calls for results, specimen collection and operations information; instruct patients on collection of samples; processes samples for send out.

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately enters patient demographics into hospital computer system and orders into Laboratory Information and/or Anatomic Pathology Information Systems, determining adequacy of both patient information and sample identity, appropriateness and stability.
  • Accurately labels patient samples according to hospital and laboratory requirements.
  • Adheres to established laboratory policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.
  • Alert supervisor or technologist of difficult problems.
  • Answers phone calls, responds to inquiries for test requirements, results, lab operations information and refers or transfers calls appropriately.
  • Assume responsibility for reporting verbal and written reports in keeping with department standards and requirements.
  • Document Quality Improvement Incidents and completes QA forms as needed. Participate in Quality Improvement activities as assigned.
  • Document pertinent clinical or technical data accurately, as required.
  • Interacts with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and stock supplies needed to maintain adequate inventory.
  • Monitor factors which may affect the results of a laboratory test including patient preparation, collection, interfering substances, or improper reporting. Keep supervisor apprised of problematic incidents.
  • Perform all responsibilities according to the service philosophy of the UPMC Health System to fulfill customers' needs.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance according to predetermined schedule and existing protocols.
  • Process samples according to requirements.
  • Train and orient new employees and students as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot instruments as per procedure as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Training as a medical assistant or high school graduate with equivalent training and/or work experience. 
  • Minimum two-years clerical or technical experience in a hospital, laboratory or physician office preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Specimen processing, phlebotomy, or medical assisting experience preferred. 
  • Knowledge of blood tests preferred. 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
