Job Summary:

Do you have prior customer service experience?  If so, this could be the role for you!  As a Patient Services Representative you will interact effectively with patients, their families and third-party payors in the waiting room at UPMC Shadyside within our Day of Admission Surgery department.  In this role you will obtain required information to ensure that the Medical Center is paid in a correct and timely manner.  This candidate will also assist with pushing patients in wheel chairs as well as escorting them to the appropriate unit.

As a casual employee, you will work a variety of shifts during the hours of 4:30 AM to 8:30 PM.

Responsibilities:
  • Accept reservations from physicians and/or their representatives for elective, urgent or direct emergency admissions.
  • Assess patient's needs based on clinical high risk screen to include information about patient's discharge needs, advanced directive status, disabilities, special arrangements needed while in the hospital, communication needs.
  • Check HDX for Medical Assistance patients.
  • Code all diagnoses, for both inpatient and outpatient registration using the ICD-9 CM Classification System, assure that diagnoses are assigned the accurate ICD-9 code.
  • Collect and record patient payments for services rendered.
  • Collect appropriate documentation for managed care programs.
  • Complete JCAHO mandated ED log, contacts referring physician and accurately record departure disposition.
  • Creation of a folder to include all applicable forms and necessary communications.
  • Ensure complete documentation is collected and distributed to appropriate persons or departments.
  • Greet patients and others, answer telephone calls and deliver messages to appropriate department personnel.
  • Inform patient to bring advance directive, if applicable, notate responses in the Medipac system.
  • Instruct patient regarding Advance Directives.
  • Interpret the information and forwards to appropriate department or Patient Finance Coordinator for further evaluation or follow-up.
  • Interview and gather information on each patient/family member/guarantor during the intake interviews which may take place in person or by telephone.
  • Obtain signature of patient or family member for consent to treatment and financial responsibility following the HIPAA rules and regulations, and instruct patient to bring advance directive (if applicable) and a list of all current medications to the hospital.
  • Perform financial screening for return patients.
  • Provide patient and/or families with a copy of the patient update informing them of their rights and responsibilities and services available (parking, cafeteria) also to be a resource if they have questions, concerns or complaints about any aspect of their stay.
  • Support and contribute to UPMC Health System (UPMCHS) service excellence mission and abide by all UPMCHS departmental policies, procedures and goals in the process of performing all job responsibilities.
  • Update incorrect information on all patients as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required. 
  • Two to four years experience in a hospital setting preferred.  
  • Previous customer service experience required. 
  • Previous experience in a fiscal/admissions/patient relations function preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9 coding and third-party healthcare preferred.  
  • Previous experience with mainframe and personal computer applications preferred.  
  • Ability to function effectively in a highly stressful, deadline-oriented environment, with very little direct supervision required. 
  • Effective communication skills required.
  • Typing skills required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
